Imperial Japanese Navy Escort UKURU Type B (1/350 by PIT-ROAD)

I was on one of my visits to Starling Models https://starling-models.co.uk/ in search of some PE for another build and came across this. Well, Mr credit card happened, also, to glimpse it and bought it. Very head strong is my credit card. Oh yeah, and I bought some PE that I was looking for AND for this kit.

So, here we go.

First impressions are that it is well moulded with no flash and lots of fine detail and not much English on the destructions. All in all, some nice looking parts, I think I'm going to enjoy this.

I hope you do too, as always, feel free to criticise and guide me if you feel I need it.

Progress so far, I've sprayed the hull, grey and red and drilled out the portholes (or should I say scuttles ? I never know)

Now, I have a question.

Does anyone know what these 'holes' are ?

I've searched t'interweb and can find nothing.

Something to do with sonar, mayhap ?

Hi Jon,

Interesting choice, I should perhaps see what's there myself. I find my card is always quite thirsty...

You are correct, it's the type 93 hydrophones. Or some creature with needles for teeth has gotten hungry.

Gidday, I think 'scuttles' is the correct term with naval ships. Hopefully others will confirm or correct me. Regards, Jeff.

Interesting underwater hull shape! Just googled it and it appears this might be due to the fact that the ships were designed to be built using pre-fabricated sections in order to eliminate the need for complex shaped steel parts?

Bit of Saturday work.

I've added some PE in the shape of some cut down railings on the rear gun platform.

And as I had a couple of ladders left over from the 'ZARA' build, I thought I'd put them to use here, not sure if they were here on the actual ship, but it seems to make sense.

Finally, anchor chains, the original were moulded on the deck, so I removed them and added these metal ones.

Something I've noticed, is the checker pattern on the decks is WAY out of scale.

Very nearly done, just the 3R's.

Rust, rigging and railings.

Gidday Jon, that didn't take you very long. In this view she looks a rather robust little warship, fuller hull form and not as sleek as the average Japanese destroyer. A very neat model. And I've never heard of the three 'R's expressed in modeling like you've just done. 🙂 Regards, Jeff.

Cheers Jeff. She didn’t take long to build and I’m not going to go too mad on the rigging or rust. As far as I know, this class of escort ship, were sort of flat packs. I believe they were made up of lots of sections, built in various places and then sent to one yard for assembly, the reason being they could be built quickly and cheaply. The railings will be a fiddle, but I don’t think any ship model looks complete without them.

I’m beginning to worry, if I’m doing something wrong. I do 2 or 3 hours a day, is this too much ? 🤔
