Display cases/shelves/cabinet.

Hi all.

Not strictly non modelling however does anyone have and good recommendations for displaying finished models? So shelves, cabinets cases.

I've been looking at some options but as a 1/72 armour builder, most of the options that I see have quite large gaps between shelves. I don't have ton of space to play with. I also want something glass fronted as I don't want to be dusting them all the time.

Curio cabinets seem like an option but I thought I'd throw out out there, what do others use?

My usual goto for furniture IKEA doesn't seem to have much suitable.

I've just bought a Detolf unit from Ikea, only available in white but at £60 I felt it was a bargain. There are 4 shelves inside & there are plenty of aftermarket options to add more using clips & acrylic sheets.

Not a bad idea, I've always looked at their stuff and felt there would be too much wasted space. Where do you get the aftermarket shelves?

I have 6 Detolf units (thankfully, so far, of the non exploding type) and have added acrylic shelves in 2 of them for my 1/72 builds. I got the additional shelves from ebay after a short search for "Detolf shelves" or something similar.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread as I'm looking into glass display cabinets for future larger 1/72 builds. I currently have a number of Detolf cases which are perfect for 1/72 fighters, although some of the larger fighter jets are a bit of a squeeze, but I'm after something much deeper to accommodate bombers. A shelf depth of around 500mm would be ideal really, but having done plenty of searching I'm struggling to find anything around that size, and certainly not cheaply- 400mm seems to be the upper limit and I won't get my shiny new Vulcan in that!

There must be a solution that many of you use, especially the larger scale modellers who must otherwise have a tough time fitting anything in a case! Any suggestions gratefully received :)

An IKEA Pax wardrobe shell with glass doors and shelves is an option. Main downside over a proper display cabinet is, being intended as a wardrobe, only the doors are glass, everything else is solid. Shelf depth is 580mm and either 460 or 960mm wide depending what size wardrobe you get. I use one of the narrow ones (with wooden doors and shelves) as my stash cupboard.

While you won't be able to easily get this US-built unit, I did have to go to a display case manufacturer to get a floor display case for my 1/48 models. The shelves are 35cm deep, but the inside width is 39cm. A 1/144 A-90 on the top shelf has a 40cm length and fits well; the 1/48 RQ-4B lower down has an 83cm wingspan and is an obvious outlier.

I'll be adding about 3 or 4 more RSN soon as it's now quite packed compared to this photo.

That's my girl Cora.

I had considered that option but really would prefer glass on at least three sides. Probably being too picky for my own good, but may have to consign myself to forking out a sizeable chunk of money to get the sort of thing I'm after....

Recently returned to modelling, I thought I'd treat myself to a cabinet dedicated to the little plastic fantastic jobbies. I settled on an Ikea Billy bookcase with Oxberg glass door, offering 6 shelves with internal dimensions 36x26cm, A$140 or about 75 quid here in Oz. Comedians may make fun of the flatpacks, but I found it well engineered and a sinch to assemble. What else would you expect from a modeller? The names Ikea chooses for its products is another matter. Billy Oxberg; Ikea bookcase, Olympic swimmer or Aldi cheese?

I also use Ikea`s Detolf, but it is not dustproof. So I built my own display cabinets. For single-engine 1/48 aircraft I built this:

This is Ikea`s Billy with a front plate made of acrylic glass. The shelves are of the same. For the front I use 3mm, for the shelves you need 5 or reinforcements (aluminium profiles) as my case.

It opens to the lower side. Acrylic glass is sold at DIY sores cut to measure.

For this one I used Ikea`s glass shelves for Billy:

For big birds I use an Ikea kichen cabinet. I must admit that it does not look as good because it is white:

(The empty space is by now occupied by my Lancaster)

These cabinets do not look perfect, but they are cheap and dustproof.

I'm not a prolific builder, as modelling is one of several hobbies I have. The few I have are either in a cupboard fitted out as my photo studio, framed and free standing or framed and wall hanging. Most of my building is for other people, so I don't have a huge storage problem. At least the framed models keeps them safe and dust free.

My daughter's Snoopy verses the Red Baron is on a bedroom wall.

The Norseman is in my art gallery room on the wall.

The Ryan is standing on a window sill in the lounge.

Other models and dioramas are in my photo studio and display space in a cupboard in my workshop.

I have two Argos display cases. The shelves are moveable, so I bought some more shelf pins from Screwfix and had a local glass specialist cut me some more shelves. I now have six glass shelves in each cabinet, and of course the bottom wooden shelf. As a bonus, they came with a light in them as well.

When I built my 1/48th vertical lightning I did not realise how tall it ended up as I normaly build in 1/72.

I could not find a display case to fit so I have made one, it's recycled from an old TV stand and some perspex.

It's somewhat 'catch as catch can,' but if you're looking for larger display units, keep an eye out for local shops (unfortunately) closing or going out of business. One can often find very reasonably-priced units at a great value...the downside being that you will nearly always have to arrange your own transport, often at fairly short notice.

At that price you might have to sell both and a slice of your liver too! 😲
