A pair of cheap brothers

Recommended Posts

I have 3 more Dee-Arrs in my stock (oh how I hate the word 'stash'! )

I might do one more for this GB. The older Revell kit I got earlier.

I'm thinking of making it into Manny's F.1, 102/17

I've already converted an Airfix Dee-Arr to Voss' F.1, 103/17

Fokker%20F.1%2C%20102-17%2C%20Werner%20V

Manny's F.1 will be another in my Richthofen collection

BTW, I succumbed and bought the Miniart kit of Manny. But it was £11.78 plus postage so its out as a contender for this GB

  • 4 weeks later...

I decided to crack on with the other old Revell Dee-Arr-Won kit.

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Although its the same boxing as the one used for Lothar's DR.1 this one has loads of flash on the parts and some of the details are not so good

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Sleepless in Seattle, . . . . . er  in Don-a-dee, I got some work done on this one.

I'll be making this into Manny's F.1, 102/17

Main differences to a DR.1 are

1. curved leading edge on the tail planes

2. a slightly smaller and more rounded rudder

3. no skids under the lower wings' tips

Lots of parts have grey primer on them now

For 1 I glued some thin plastic strip to the leading edges of the tail planes, to be shaped when the glue is set

This kit has the skids moulded to the lower wing so those were shaved off

All for now

First step on altering the tail planes; a few thin strips added to the leading edges

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Almost done, the curve has been sanded, just some tidying and fixing of the fabric ribs

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

A basic cockpit made up and painted

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Since these photos the fuselage has been closed up and the bottom wing put on.

Just about all the rigging and control wire holes have been drilled.

I heat stretched some hollow plastic tube from some cotton buds (aka Q-tips to US readers). I think I did about 15 until I had enough of different sizes. Some of this was then cut down and glued through holes drilled in the fuselage for the air-intake pipes which stick out but which are not on the kit.

There is a technique of putting some wire in the tube to support it as you heat stretch it but that doesn't work for me

I've been trying to blitz this over the last couple of days.

I never stopped to get stage photos but here it is as of 08.40

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Revell%201-72%20Fokker%20Dr.1%2C%20Manfr

Since these photos the middle wing is on and I've had to clamp it till the glue sets. The engine cowling is on as well

It'll be dicey if I can get this finished and into the Gallery before the deadline.

I'll push on and try

I need to print the Fok F1 102/17 decals
