The Great Escape
Hoping someone can answer a query or direct me to a source: I’m working on a Panzer iii ausf L. I’ve bought the Haynes Owner’s Manual but it doesn’t answer my question. I want it to be winter and have bought these figures: Would their uniform at that time, so winter 1942/43 (as it’s Ausf L), be white or green splinter? Or Was this uniform actually reversible? Thanks people.
JackG
The winter suit was available in large numbers by autumn of 1942, and it was reversible. The design was loose fitting, and allowed to be worn over basic uniforms. When initially presented in April for approval, it was of only plain colours - white with obverse side mouse grey. Prescribed wear was to use white on the outside only when necessary since it easily became dirty. The Heer was much slower than the SS to adopt camouflage patterns for wear. The book I'm referencing gives no hint to what ratio mouse grey and splinter patterns were available on these winter suits, other than both were made available. The Great Escape
Thanks for the reply @JackG I’ve gone for splinter as I think it’ll make it a bit more interesting than white and isn’t historically inaccurate.
