The doors are normally closed, except for the small leg doors, so it doesn't matter too much, but I'd normally use the same grey colour as the cockpit, at least for an RAF or NASA machine.

Not the P.1127. But the Kestrel eventually flew with NASA markings.

"National Aeronautics and Space Administration". I got the pic off Airliners.net, with the agreement of the copyright holder, who thought it was a P.1127. Accordingly I'll not be posting it here.

Nothing to do with the space program but NASA was and still is very active in the study and development of the VTOL concept. It is one of the reasons why they operated two Kestrels, carrying the US designation XV-6A:
XS694, to the US as 64-18268, that became NASA 520

XS689, to the US as 64-18263, that became NASA 521

The same agency later used an AV-8C and the AV-8B prototypesfor testing.

Hi!

I have started an Airfix P.1127 kit and need to know what colors are the gear wells, landing gear, and door interiors. Can anyone help?

Bruce

They were either a light grey or anodised aluminium

I have some walkaround shouts of XP831 at South Kensington, they used to be online but got lost in an ISP change

From P.1127 XP831 in the Science Museum London.

Main bay - front and rear walls gloss white. Remainder natural metal. Inside door/airbrake, natural metal.

Nose-wheel bay - gloss white. Inside doors natural metal with a darker metal rubbing plate where they are dished for the wheel. Landing light (black surround) mounted inside front of port door. Edges of starboard door, gloss white.

Outrigger bays and undercarriage units/wheel hubs natural metal.

For a Kestrel, based on the restored XS695 at RAFM Cosford, the colours are broadly the same but with some key differences.

If anyone wants to know more, drop me a PM with your direct email address in it.

Cheers,

Nick
