resized_2585f118-236d-4787-bdd1-03abd715My head says the Smer ( as it’s by far the better kit), my heart says a nice austro Hungarian oeffag but not the box scheme, I’ve built one of the DIIIs before so nice bitten twice shy, and I’ll probably build the monoplane anyway. I think I’ll sleep on it…

Hi Marklo. Welcome to the GB. And what a great collection of Albatrosses!! I'm looking forward to seeing which one you chose to make.

Kind regards,

Stix

resized_0cb6ed14-153e-4628-be31-eceee76eThe heart wins. It is possible to get a decent model out of this kit but will need a bit of work.

Next decision, the colour scheme. I’m leaning towards Frederick Navratils machine but I also like the plainer scheme. Although I can wait till last thing to decide as The camouflaged machine is a plain scheme with olive brown applied over it.

resized_2c867164-7a33-4d81-8a4e-37e4015eA little paintwork and a bit of assembly. This is an odd kit in that the parts are generally accurate but are unfinished, for example the undersides of the wings are blank but the upper surfaces have a nice tub detail. Anyway I am going to try to get this one done without too much scratch building. So far I have resisted the urge to discard the kit tail planes and will fix them with filler :)

Imho the definitive reference. Love that price tag, shows how long ago I bought it !

Dug out my Albatros in action and found a photo of my preferred build, only Squadron/ signal attribute it to Adolf Blaha a Czech pilot in the Austro Hungarian airforce. At the end of the war he was allowed to fly the plane home to Czechoslovakia. Some nice detail of the exhausts ( individual not manifolded) and the gun barrels.

I’ve also sanded, trimmed and skinned the wings. Will post a pic when I get a chance. Next up will be to trim the wings, score the control surfaces and detail the interior which in the 253 series Albatross is quite different to the standard German built interior.

resized_728b8ef6-f981-4fb1-bc45-2b83ea1fWings skinned just need. Little more trimming and we’re there. Interior next which is different on the 253 builds to a regular German Albatros owing to the different engine and the mounting of the Schwarlose machine guns inside the fuselage.

d2f202a1-12ef-4e51-ab6b-547a8ee19ab7.jpeTrimmed and scribed and ready to go. Just need to drill the lower wings to pin them to the fuselage and of course for struts and rigging.

Should get the lower wings and the undercarriage on tomorrow.

resized_3f6e584f-f45a-4aa0-845f-b35bd8f5Undercarriage fitted and the basic colourscheme roughed out. I’ll paint it in natural finish and apply the national markings before adding the camouflage green and the personal markings.

Interior and engine next.
