FAA builds, 32nd Hawker Nimrod ,Seafire now finished, Malta Sea Gladiator now underway.

Recommended Posts

The Seafires must be so frustrating but you'll turn them both into gems when you have the inclination. If they were mojo sapping the Nimrod and Hurricane must mojo regenerating. The Nimrod stringer details are beautifully precise. The Sea Hurri is already looking amazing before you've even started to apply your trademark weathering skills. There's a lot to celebrate here Chris.

The Sea Hurricane underside is finally getting there,  I wasn't happy with a couple of areas and so redid them after a rub down.  The cannon have been fitted too

A few  of detail points on the Sea Hurricane you may wish to tweak.

The Fly kits are overall well done but their research can be poor.

they provide the right carb intake, but I don't know if it's shown on the plans.   Not helped by references getting it wrong, eg the Valiant Wings 'guide'

it wider and has a fairing at the rear

AFAIK the 3 belly lights are post war or even just warbird requirement., the above being one the BBMF planes, chosen for the carb intake

just visible here, single light.  The other two circles are doors for flare tubes.(and later lights as above)

This image (one of 4) is identified in the Valiant Wings book as an "unknown Sea Hurricane IB with rocket plates"... when it's NF728 of 760 Sq based at Inskip, taken on HMS Ravager on 4 Oct 1944, being used to train Firefly pilots.... code letters should be yellow, despite what many profiles say.... for a FAA training unit.

in another from the sequence not the two aerials, behind the radiator and in the wing roundel.   I think the wing is IFF, not sure of the other one

finally, and the less seen front image.

No headrest.  The Sea Hurricane II did not have catapult spools and did not need the padded headrest for catapult launches.

Only just looked in, sorry if too late.

All looking great  :goodjob:

Hi Chris,

what a shame with the Seafires, but as has been said, you'll make them look fabulous!

The Nimrod interior looks amazing! The red dope and stringers are brilliant. One of my favourite aircraft, I'm looking forward to seeing your next update.

The Sea Hurri camo looks fab, too - I'm in awe of how you make brush painting look so good. Stunning finish!

Cheers,

Mark

Chris,

Sorry to hear about the Seafire wings, but the EDSG on the Sea Hurri makes up for it - looking great!

Shame about the Seafire hassles Chris, but I'm sure you'll eventually beat them into submission and they'll be another pair of cracking builds! Sea Hurri is looking tremendous!

Thanks Keith , I hope I can as I hate hhe thought of binning a model, thanks for the kind words

That's a bit of bad luck with the Seafires but i know you will pull a solution out of the hat and they will be stunners.

Talking about stunners the Hurricane is looking fabulous.

Cheers,

Alistair

Thanks Alistair,  not sure about stunners though 😉 the Hurri painted is pleasing but looks like I might need to sort he Hurri out a bit more.

Thanks guys

Thanks Richie, will have to see if they rejuvenate the Mojo, need another coat of EDSG  then some fading.

Thanks Troy for the information

They do but the destructions aren't specific in quite a few areas.  I will have to see if I can get the intake off as well in there!!!

I did wonder and have seen that image and completely missed that so very handy as I can fill them thanks.

Thanks too although I saw a pic of a Hurri landing with the hook down on a carrier with a headrest, on Military images.net, this is 1b on HMS Argus in 1943 so wonder if that was a Hurricat landing perhaps on an escort carrier, will try a bit more research.

Thanks Troy, not too late and help is always appreciated.

Thanks Mark, the brushwork is not as hard as you think, but that is with enamels as opposed to acrylics .  I love the painting bit most of all. Going to be working more on the locos too.

Thanks Roger, always love the EDSG and how it transforms the model.  Will hopefully get some more done later.

Thanks guys for the encouragement the Seafires did dampen the spirits but I will try and make them good .

Thanks Troy also for the information , I did'nt dig far enough.

It's not obvious,  problem with Hurricanes is they are pretty much all the same,  but with some confusing small differences that are mostly the sort of thing only a modeller will want to know.....  which are not well covered because of this.

So,  even with a deep dig you may not get the answers.   I've now spent a long time , as the bit under the avatar says, 'Collating Hurricane data'  so it's easy  enough for me to spot glitches and  give you the info.   To be honest, the details I mention are not ones you would know to check,  so how do you research what you don't know you are looking for!   Maybe the under fuselage lights.

Anyway, glad it is of use and not too late.

the correct intake is bigger than the existing one, which may make it easier as it would hide the present mounting points.

a Hurricat is one of the CAM ship planes (no hook, just spools)

Sea Hurricane IB have hook and spools.   I don't know if this was done just to make them CAM compatible.

I have never seen a Sea Hurricane II with the head rest.

I don't know enough about the carriers they operated from, but AFAIK they were not catapult equipped.  Again, there is no good reference on the Sea Hurricane, it's a question of collating what information there is.

cheers

PS what scheme are you doing?  Fly are not good on decal research.   And one more detail you may need to check

Tropical vents.   Became standard on late production, and it easier to mould them on a kit

terryprendergasthurricaneburma.jpg

here's a pic, the two little black lines directly below the pilots right foot, are vents to help cooling on tropical aircraft.

See what I mean. Little details....

Thanks Troy, I have corrected the intake, 3 belly lights and the headrest last night the two vents however I have not (yet ) removed.

I am doing the NF694 (Sheila), code U from HMS Stricker.  I have found some pics of it in a similar position to the photos you posted.  Fly colour call out is a bit squiffy calling for a land based scheme, If they are correct I am going to continue it as a what if😉😄

Thanks for your help Troy

That's a great photo, it shows very well how subtly the stringers show on the fabric covered section.

Wash added to the Nimrod interior,  just need to dry brush the grey over and will be ready for cockpit insert.

Nearly painted the majority or yhe Corsair, but then found more fettling needed

As previously said instead of two Mk.Vbs with the conversions,  I got one and a Mk.1, wing alterations/corrections ongoing

Bulges for the underwing area taken from the now not needed lower wings from the Seafire III.  I have also saved the undercarriage areas incase needed

Getting there slowly

Thanks for looking in

Thanks again Troy you're certainly saving my blushes on this build.

hahaha... I hadn't even noticed,  I just thought you might find the pics of interest.    I did say the Fly were blinkin' awful in their markings/decals research!

Again, proves my comment about profiles and photos...

https://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/ESCORT/Galleries/STRIKER_Gllery_2.htm

I can't recall what Fly say, but the spinners were black

Striker09.jpg

one detail I can't see in the crash photos, so may not be relevant,  but something I'd see on Vindex Hurricanes, the clipped leading edge of the UC door, I presume to avoid snagging the wires.

I think this was also in the Fly kit options.

Striker104.jpg

Anyway, a pleasure to have helped even if inadvertently!

They do call that correctly, looking at the picture of NF694 mid mishap, it does look like a clipped U/C doors lookingvat the shape when I zoomed in, I will have a look to see what I csn see about yhis mod so I can use it.

Yes Libby is also one of the options in the kit under serial NF699.

Thanks again fella, much appreciated
