Otto's Mobile - Some 1/144 Builds

Recommended Posts

I realize that the horse is out of the barn now, however couldn't the tires of the Spitfires been sorted out by simply removing the roof of the wheel wells where they sit?

This has been fun watching, you're a good granddad.

Will the sound track include "fnarr, fnarr, snurf, snurf"? There's nothing like personalising a build and then your Grandson will always know that it was you that built it for him.

Everything is going to plan.

Excellent stuff. I've sprayed Lifecolor just once with UMP Thinners and it went down with a really smooth finish but took a long time to cure.

Cheers,

Alistair

Lifecolor! Nice paints, if a bit tricky to spray. I had great success spraying them through my PROCON BOY airbrush, as you might remember, and thinning them with a mix of IPA and water, or Future and  drop of Windex.

For brush painting, I almost exclusively use that brand.

Ciao

Good news Giorgio - if it's good enough for the master… :)

Thanks SK - maybe, but I think the wheels are oversize, unlike the wing thickness, and I might have ended up with a really thin 'roof'.

Also, I'm used to the 'thin the tyres' method so better the devil you know :)

:D

I think Otto's a bit young to be introduced to Finbarr and his Viz mates.

I'll have to wait until he can read, but then… :wicked:

Thanks Ali - hopefully the brushed will dry faster; you know how impatient I am! :)

Looking good but won't the Spits be in the grey/green top sides?

Or were you showing the colors for the Hurri?

Good point Phil :)

Although 'realism' isn't my primary goal it does mean I can paint the Spits now and not have to wait until the Hurri arrives.

And so…

I've also started assembling bits for the 'hanging':

51192021965_62336b3c41_z.jpg

I think a 'cross' of runners, or maybe the acrylic rod, supporting a ring of the green wire.

Then I can hang the planes around the ring 'chasing each other'.

I had planned to have them in pairs with, obviously, the RAF in attack but I think the 'all in a circle' will be more 'PC'.

Unusual for me I know, but I'm all for an easy life…

I expect some RFI's later this evening?

Cheers

That seem De rigueur for little Otto !!

This idea of a mobile is definitely great however with movies music...

But a bit of wild guitars can help too !!

Keep carry on Grandpa Ced !!

Sincerely.

You heavy metal fans!

Finally:

51191366481_8139ba8123_z.jpg

It must be part of Leigh-Mallory's 'Big Wing'.

Single part tree:

51192140289_2e87bd2446_z.jpg

…plus the canopy (in that lump somewhere) and transfers:

Look, wheels up/down options:

51192159939_aa2aea92ec_z.jpg

If only all manufacturers did this - in my dreams!

Very soon:

Of course I painted the cockpit. I've left the peg 'flesh' so it gives the impression of a pilot.

(I'm sorry, I don't do impressions. My training is in Psychiatry :rofl2:)

The RAF is mustering:

Having masked the demarcation line I started painting the DG and then realised I needed to mask the canopies:

No masking instructions.

Hmmm.

Can I work this out?

51194271707_bde1c570ac_z.jpg

That's zoomed in, a lot.

Now I can see the windscreen front, sides, two 'along the bottom and over the top' bits and the rectangles for the rear.

With a microscope strapped to my head, they're on:

I've Aqua Gloss'd the edges (good boy) and, when it's dry, I'll slosh some more paint on.

Thanks Ali and Giorgio :)

Of course there's no mask for the Hurri but it does have well defined frames so I used one of the engineering pens (or whatever they're called) that Heather (I think) uses:

51196295855_a039b4af86_z.jpg

If you get the nib gap just right and you get the angle on the frame just right you can draw paint along the frame.

Neat.

If you don't get it right you get a blob of paint on the canopy.

Rats.

Soon scrape off with a cocktail stick though.

I hope.

Green done using the Eduard scheme and an old Hurri template I had on the Mac:

Three coats.

Then the DE and Ocean Grey first coat:

51195232667_a002186615_z.jpg

Nearly there.

Your Doctor when it doesn't get better.

Oh, on the wings? Ah, erm, nice paint, Mister.

I thought 'the old trouble' was back again.

Crisp moulding too.

Nothing to do with me, Guv.

I’ve only just found this (you big softy, you).  Lovely idea.

Needs a Seafire.  Better still, a Swordfish - so you can perk up your rigging skills.  Plus no need for wheels-up surgery; bonus!

Lining pens I believe Ced - well done on using it on canopy framing that small! I bought one years ago to try and do lining on OO locos (1/76 scale) - complete and utter disaster!

They're all looking rather nice indeed!

Crisp you are wicked! Rigging at 144 would certainly do me in :D

Looking fantastic Mr B. Canopy masks. Wow that crackers at this scale. The wing lines are spot on too. 👏👏👏🙌

Ah, lining pens, that's the ones, thanks Keith :)

I think the secret is to get the nib gap / paint thinness / angle to the model exactly right.

I just got lucky…

Now then, I wish to register a complaint.

I applied the transfers to the first Spit then, when I came to do the second… no roundels:

51197863294_4e7e1bd568_z.jpg

Apparently you can't put RAF stickers on both.

Rats.

What do I have in the stash.

Not surprisingly, only 1/72.

But wait, isn't 144 half the size?

These will do on the bottom:

51196380502_7e4bf25cd9_z.jpg

These:

51197313403_fa5447faed_z.jpg

Nope.

I'll have to make do with these:

51197107206_b55a14a14c_z.jpg

Not to bad if you're not an historian!

The Hurricane got the supplied transfers:

51197091541_a93b834135_z.jpg

Nice.

Now they all need a matt coat when the transfers are dry:

This post is a bit industrial so please feel free to skip it.

Two cross bars:

51197159521_c616e29b19_z.jpg

With notches cut out:

51197384653_2b884fca17_z.jpg

Glued and wired:

51197988629_3c16ff41e3_z.jpg

Holes drilled in the ends and flower arranging wire glued in with Araldite:

51197437813_c0148eea6a_z.jpg

Now I need to work out how to mount everything so it can be taken apart for transportation.

Hmmm :hmmm:

Simply lovely Ced. Otto is a lucky lucky lad!

I have one question though. I see from your B17 thread that you are now in the habit of building one example for yourself and another for elsewhere. So when are you starting on your own mobile?

Craig.
