1/48th A-4N “Ayit”, 102 Squadron “The Flying Tigers”, 2014

Recommended Posts

This was built as part of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk STGB.

This is the first of a series of IDF aircraft I’ll be building in the future. The Hasegawa 1/48th A-4N (and A-4M’s) is quite hard to find now and when you can they are VERY expensive!! But a few years ago Hasegawa teamed up with Creative Works to release a range of kits as part of the “Area 88” range. These were just re-boxing of popular Hasegawa models. Strangely this range sells for quite a bit less that the original boxing and is often easy and cheaper to find/buy.

Plus Hasegawa likes to include all the extra bits you need to build other version as well. In this case though I did need the Armycast A-4N upgrade set.

She was painted using AK Interactives Real Color paint, which in my opinion are only second to the Mr. Paint Lacquers which I think is the best paint out there. The Real Color paint needs to be thinned (and can be thinned down to 95:5 without issues) and just goes on like a dream and gives you a super finish.

The decals were also from Armycast and are superb! Just clear coat them before you attempt any other work…… like washes… you have been warned!

Thank you for looking, attached is the link to the build.

Model: Hasegawa 1/48th A-4M Skyhawk “Greg Gates – Area 88”

Aires – Cockpit set 4280

Fantastic 'Ayit'!  Those AK Real Colors look the part too.

Cheers,

Albert

Thanks.

That Real Color paint is really worth a look if you like using lacquer paints or if you want to move on from the Tamiya/Gunze range. Compared to other lacquer based paints here in Oz it's cheap, around the price of Tamiya stuff and readily available (a huge problem with Mr. Paint lacquers). They seem to have gone very specialised with there colour range which is nice.

It is super thick in the bottle so you have to thin it down quite a bit, with either AK's High Compatible Lacquer Thinner (which is nice is nice), Tamiya's (yellow cap), or good quality automotive lacquer thinner (test first). The paint will easily thin down to 95:5, and just sprays on like a dream, no clogging (well I run at 70:30 mix so it's super thin to start with), quick drying and gives you a fantastic finish. You can start masking almost straight away, but it's better to give a wee bit of time for the paint to harden, it's really tough then.

Still in my opinion the Mr.Paint range is the best out there, but this stuff is nearly it's equal and being readily available here the go to for high quality paint!

Did you see Kinetic have put out a new box for the F-16C Barak kit? The way they've posted it on facebook it implies it's been updated

no I haven't.

I'm not planning a 1/48th IDF F-16, I will though be building the Academy 1/32nd F-16I beasty in June for the F-16 STGB!

But never say never with me, a 1/48th version is bound to join the stash at some stage!  :D

I've always preferred the lines of the single seat F-16 variants. First Fighter Squadron and Agressor Squadron have nice tail art
