Good evening.

More Mustang action has occurred over the past few days. 🤩 Work is still hectic and as the world opens back up again life is getting more hectic, I guess we must make time, right. 😍 well here’s a few steps of progress.

The wooden panels got masked to re spray the green.

51205420223_84796a5b28_b.jpg

Say Greeeeen. 💚

51206279320_12fd250f3b_b.jpg

also painted the brown panel. Although it’ll be under the seat anyway.
looks quite yellow in this shot but it’s just close to the light.
Masking off.

51206279520_6be2c0e3b5_b.jpg

Too clean for my liking but that’ll get fixed in the Flory pass. 🙌

while that dried I got a little emotional over this.

51206124054_25c3761f1d_b.jpg

😔 At least I stocked up before they pulled the plug.

Anyway it was out to good use. At last the IP got stuck to it’s plastic counterpart.

51205357181_7f37590730_b.jpg

The side walls got their PE added too.

51205981189_49245a30ac_b.jpg

And tother side.

51205564643_81781728e8_b.jpg

Really nice working with this. I think I might get this set for mine when the time comes.

Here’s are the parts this far just before the top coat.

51206124069_2f93b1a6d2_b.jpg

The black strip got painted on the wooden planks and worn off with a cotton bud. The box section got sprayed too.

51205357096_5b80a3f853_b.jpg

Don’t worry. That middle green is a plastic lid in the background. I double took myself when I saw the pic. Kind of throws it off balance. 🤪 That got glossed again ready for some much needed grot. 🙌

This all happened over a few days. So let’s talk weathering. Well I floried most of the bits and after drying I’m liking what I’m seeing so I’m only knocking back slightly.

 The base walls.

51205564383_e2da8e5cb8_b.jpg

rear of the seat and head rest.

51204641447_f5195013b5_b.jpg

And the other side.

51205564358_2ab44d7e40_b.jpg

The main seat.

51206123774_b9552eed3f_b.jpg

Fire wall.

51206422575_01d7dd815e_b.jpg

Canopy runner.

51206422580_801b8367fa_b.jpg

The side panels came out well.

51204497937_00cdccf251_b.jpg

And on the other side.

51204641452_0fa3fe498a_b.jpg

This is before I cleaned up the slight pooling of the Flory. Overall I’m happy. A few control stalks to add I can start the construction.  I worked on the clean up tonight and added some Tamiya weather powders but left my phone downstairs so I didn’t get any pics. I’ll sort that tomorrow. Currently there may coat is drying as is the Flory wash on the foot boards. 😇

By the way change of plan. There seem to be an awful lot of mustangs going to the museum and they all seem to be NMF. So I have decided to change my scheme and go with the other one in the box.

51205564713_d6620c9ff7_b.jpg

Still stripy. 🐝

Thanks for stopping by.

No modelling tomorrow as Fencing is back on. 🤺 but there is a Bank holiday coming. 🧘

Take care and as always. Happy modelling.

 Johnny.

Really nice, your cockpit is now more accurate, looking fenomenal, one point if I may, the rack that goes on top of the fuel tank is also black instead of green, here are some unrestored examples, cheers

Whhhhaaaa? A sunny Bank holiday weekend in half term? Who da thunk it. 😲☀️🐝

Most of the time has been spent in the garden but I have managed some bench time this morning. As mentioned to Ced I had a close shave with the seat fixings but we’ll get to that in a minute.

First up I had to re paint that frame work.
Done and dusted. Literally. With Tamiya powders. 😀

51214423257_367af1fb5b_b.jpg

The iP got knocked back a little. It’s a bit harsh in this pic but in situ it’s fine.

51215901344_83cca9cfa8_b.jpg

So here we are. All ready to go together.

51215353873_b0ec72aa9b_b.jpg

A few close ups so you can see the wash. I’m happy with the way they have turned out.

51215129411_b4e7686b91_b.jpg 51214412652_8e7617d566_b.jpg

The tube got glued. You have to chop off the connecting pin at the back of the pipe if you have fitted the PE set as other wise it gets fouled at the rear.

51214412677_0457eff91c_b.jpg

Now two words of warning if you’re going to build this kit. It’s not the kit but a bit of a rubbish instruction manual:

one.

This is not the connection point for the IP. It looks like that’s what the instructions say but it’s actually quite a bit higher.

51216197195_a18bfc2722_b.jpg

Two.

See the way seat spots proud of the seat bracket? Well that’s wrong. It kind of dominoes into a whole heap of things not fitting. 😩

51214412587_c52cfb0d15_b.jpg

only thing for it is a bit of TET and some scalpel persuasion. Here’s the part after much panic and twitchy bending of plastic.

51215129441_fb0409c5c8_b.jpg

It all got glued and held in place.

51214412302_412bfa30b4_b.jpg

This is the correct location. A nice shot of the worn grip material on the foot plates. ❤️

51214412312_523ed52726_b.jpg

Luckily there are lots of connection points that I didn’t see originally that when you put it all together give that satisfying “Click” here’s one.

51214412307_980fd02a95_b.jpg

Also with the IP sitting too low the pedals don’t reach their connection point. Cousin thoughts of extending the part etc but raising it to the correct position caused everything to just “Click”. Notice the two IP connectors sitting on the top runner. That’s what you want.

51216197215_71fed415c6_b.jpg

Now the seat is the right height and I can fit all the other bits.

51216197200_e98882e0d3_b.jpg

Huzzah.  Hopefully now the right colour.

51214412297_9c06fb88ec_b.jpg

With that little panic over I decided to do a lot more dry fitting.

The intakes and the rear landing gear bay are one sun assembly.

51215140451_7ed59295a6_b.jpg

The bay is Zinc Chromate but does anyone know what the internals of the intakes are?
these bits.

51216208765_2ab9f73fca_b.jpg

And from the other side. I’m assuming black/ metallic but I can’t be sure and the instructions have no call outs as such.

51215140331_2589cc2a25_b.jpg

The front Wells got glued too while I was at it.

51216208630_8a5949b0a8_b.jpg

And more dry fitting.

51215354173_34bcc71343_b.jpg

Looks like an aeroplane.

51215901159_42ee14db57_b.jpg

Some more internals visible as part of the wing section.

51216197630_13ffddac03_b.jpg

Although when the tub is fitted will hardly be seen.

51215342938_d60c66a100_b.jpg

A bit of clean up and I think this one is going to come together quite quickly.

 Here we are for now.

51215890414_7b8f9739a9_b.jpg

Maybe a bit more later.

Thanks for all the kind words and I hope you all had a splendid weekend.

Those internals came along really nice, Johnny! :worthy:

Maybe I missed it, can you please tell what kind of green have you been using for the cockpit? TIA

Thanks G.
As you know I use Tamiya acrylics. I was having trouble finding a good match for this green but someone suggested a mix of:

Yellow XF-3 and green XF-5 at a ratio of 2:1  so two yellow and one green. Seems to look pretty close.  Hope that helps.

Thanks Johnny   - that is the same indication you can find on the Tamiya kit instructions. I was wondering if the Tamiya XF-71 Cockpit Green was a good match too, although by the looks of it, it probably need some yellow added too... Or maybe I'm totally off with that....

I was going to use XF71 but it didn’t look “juicy” enough to me so the mix happened and I thought it looked good and ran with it.   BTW I found on the instructions it says either Zinc Chromate or silver for the vent internals. I think I’m going for Zinc. Hope that’s right? 🤔

Also does any one know if it’s ok to have the two lower vents open when landed? I wanted to do that.

Johnny.

You’re doing some nice work there Jon. Now I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet but if you are going to finish

it as Pascoe’s Desert Rat P-51D-5 or not but the early D’s did not have that small scoop on the left hand cowling panel just above the leading edge of the wingroot.

If memory serves this scoop was only added when the battery location was changed on the later airframes (-20 and above

IIRC)

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Cheers

Johnny, just catching up--this looks great--looking forward to how you will sort out the main gear bays.  Have you given any consideration to foil for this build?  Best, Erwin

Thanks Erwin. “Sort out the main gear”? They look ok to me. Is there something I should know? 😯

Johnny, I did not see your work on the bays on the thread—given the caliber of your work I know you will hit the main gear bays out of the park—between you and G, I am curious how you both will conquer the YZC/NMF finish of this area.  FWIW, you may recollect I used foil for my 1/72d build—but I am not in your league, so I look forward to learning—best, Erwin
