Making Wave Trails in Foam

I'm in the process of making a D-Day landing diorama and I wanted to know some ways for making waves with paint and foam, Help?

I used grouting from a Poundland shop.

As it set I used a palette knife to make the waves.

I then painted it all with very wet not-properly mixed mix of blue, green and grey, then when that had dried I put on lots of gloss varnish. I dry brushed the wave tops and other areas with white paint
