Hi Everyone

Although I am new to the site, I am not new to modelling.

I am going to purchase the above kit.  However, after contacting the on line store, unusually, there is no list of suggested paints in the instructions.  I did find a 1/32 scale of the aircraft by Hasegawa, but there was no paint list for the kit on their website either.

Does anyone have a suggested paint list (Humbrol, Revell, Tamiya or Vallejo paints preferred)?  Looking at the box picture on the stores website, the colours do look similar to the Mitsubishi Zero, which I have made.

On a separate note, does anyone know of a store where I can purchase the Tamiya Sherman Firefly which comes with 6 figures? As it's not listed on Tamiya's website, I am assuming that it is discontinued.

Many thanks in advance for replies.

Steve

Hi Steve - go here:

http://www.aviationofjapan.com/

Scroll down and find this on the right column of the page:

Aviation of Japan Key Data Guide # 1 - Mitsubishi J2M Raiden Colour Notes

Order it and you get an excellent guide to paint your Raiden. Suggestions for hobby paints ref. green are in the next one, if you want to buy both or just this one:

IJN Dark Greens

All this information can also be found on Nick's website when you use the search function.

The best, i.e. most authentic colours are produced by Colourcoats (enamels).

Cheers, Michael

Hello! welcome to Britmodeller, it's a great site to read and comment. Suggest that you go to the "New Members" thread and introduce yourself there. You will discover that there is a wealth of information from the many members on here. Just ask and some one will provide an answer. Good luck and happy modelling!

Thanks for info.  However, please can you give me a link to Nick's website?

I agree with the comment about Colourcoats being the best/most accurate paints. The 'grey' can be a bit of a nightmare but Colourcoats have several that are true to those used on Japanese aircraft along with the dark green, Mitsubishi cowl blue/black and the correct brown for the prop.

My current A6M2 Zero is my first foray into the world of Japanese WW2 aircraft and it can be/is a bit of a minefield with so many differing opinions, so much so that after reading all of them you feel even more confused than when you started. As such I went with the Colourcoats paints and so far it looks like a PH period Zero, so that will do for me.

Regards

Colin.

Welcome! A couple of asides...

The "Scalemates" site is a great reference when researching available kits:

https://www.scalemates.com/products/product.php?id=149977&p=timeline

The Arii 1/48 "Jack" is quite a good kit for its age, but I would respectfully suggest that the newer Tamiya and especially Hasegawa kits in that scale are superior. Hasegawa makes different versions beyond the "standard" J2M3, too. (Note that the Arii, Otaki, and Micro Ace brands are all the same molds.)

Hasegawa's 1/32 J2M kits are also excellent, and Zoukei-Mura offers a very pricey but amazingly detailed kit in that scale.

I cannot recommend Mr. Millman's publication, as mentioned above, highly enough; the ultimate Raiden painting guide.

Many thanks and apologies for not replying sooner.

I have now purchased the Tamiya version, though, although they give the colours to be used, they do not give the code number of the respective paints.  I have sorted out all but black-blue, which is a 3:1 mix.  However, as there are many different 'blacks' and 'blues', I have ordered the Ammo by Migjeminez Crystal Black Blue.  Also, I couldn't find a Tamiya, orange-yellow either, so have ordered the Mr Hobby / Gunze Sangyo 10ml Aqueous Colour Orange Yellow # 24.

I'm not worried if these are the correct shades or not, as I do not publicly show my kits. I just build them as a hobby.

Once again, many thanks.

Tamiya paints have both IJAAF (Army) and IJN(Navy) colours, the Raiden was navy

the ones matched for the kit were XF-11 J N green and XF-12 J N Grey.

Though later they did XF-70

https://www.tamiya.com/english/products/81770/index.htm

which strikes me as a better option.

The Blue balck can be made easily, mix some blue into black, Tamiya will specify Tamya paint, Xf-1 Black and XF-8 blue is what they mean (and Tamiya instructions do give paint codes usually)  and the wing leading edges can be mixed as well.   The linked Aviation of Japan blog will give you the best answers.

erm, why ask then?   Anyway,  simple answer would be Tamiya XF-12 and XF-70.

If you don't have a shop nearby with Tamiya,  Jadlam racing on ebay do individual paints  shipped for £2.95, which is as cheap as i have found.

Note, most people at a model show wouldn't know about Japanese colours either.  I'm still learning about them,  and AFAIK, apart from the noted pdf's, there is not a current book,  I don't think anything has really superceded the Donals Thorpe books, and they are about 50 years old!

Note, finally, Tamiya decals,

if nothing else, ie, specialist setting solutions, use hot water.

Take a look at the link to the Hasegawa 1/32 kit instructions which NAVY870 posted above. It includes a long list of colors with Gunze Aqueous Color paint numbers.
