Just an observation from the book, Citizen Soldiers by Steven E Ambrose. 

'As the tanks rolled through the wreckage of France and Belgium the streets were filled with rubble'.

'Once they crossed the German border, they generally found that once the fighting was over, the locals came out to tidy up & sweep the streets.'

Hah, I was tempted to crack a joke last night along those lines of the Germans cleaning stuff up, but thought naah, I better not.

You said it better than I could anyway.
