South Goodwin Lightship

Recommended Posts

Back in those heady pre-covid days of 2017 a young, rather gifted young modeller called @beefy66 built a rather splendid example of this kit. So, inspired as always, I will try to  emulate the master and have go myself.

This kit seems to have had a varied past, being replicated by many model producers, mine being by a Russian company called ARK MODELS.

As you can see from the deckhouse roof, the passage of time has been none to kind, but the application of very hot water and it fits ok.

I've sprayed the hull with red primer, and I'm almost tempted to leave it, but I don't think the shade is right.

I will be including the PE set from ATLANTIC MODELS https://atlanticmodels.net/

As always, I'm open to any guidance and criticism you might have.

I was inspired by that build as well, and as a result have the kit and etch in the stash.

I will be following with interest.

Welcome aboard. I’ll heat up the cocoa.

Jon you really must stop telling these jokes I can't get any modelling done for laughing

Wise man, Young gifted modeller cheque is in the post mate all 50 pence of it.

Looking at the ARK version you have the plastic looks different Grey and looks soft if you have that kind of distortion in the Eastern Express version I built it was white and I thought it was brittle but was not sure if that was because of the kits age a bit like me.

good recovery on the decking though will tag along and offer any help I can there were some very good links in the build thread I did some interesting stuff on these Lightships.

Little by little it taking shape, the instructions are a bit vague, but sort of make sense.

The hull and deckhouse portholes have been glazed using AMMO MIG ACRYLIC CRYSTAL.

I've started on the railings on top of the deckhouse and have fitted the deck to the hull. The threads are for pulling the anchor chains through at some point.

All looking very fine - nice detailing

Rob.

It’s coming on, biggest problem is interpreting the instructions, to say they are vague is being kind. But, I sort of enjoy a challenge.

Worst bit today was sanding the lines off the light and then polishing it clear again. Took a while, but it is clear again.

Have you tried dipping the lens in to some clear floor polish I used some on mine think you can get it as called Johnston clear pledge now or something like that.

Lens, that was the word I was searching for. I did wonder about dipping it, I gave it a final polish with T-Cut and it came up pretty well. Removing the moulded ‘frame’ did reveal bubbles in the plastic, but these should be covered by the PE frame. I’ll look at dipping it today. It was a bit worrying, sanding off the moulded frame and wondering if it would ever be clear again.

I have filed off the moulded frame from the lens of the light, and then polished it with different grades of emery, finishing with a polish of T-Cut. Quite pleased with the result. PE frame rolled and fitted.

Then the walkway was removed from the light base and the PE replacement bent and fitted.

The light tower is complete, except for the internal ladder which I'll fit when I place the tower on the deckhouse roof.

p?i=8ca0417fa01a1c38064fba5c518d7689

This is the PE ladder.

Next I've given the two lifeboats a coat of gloss red, they didn't look right matt. The cover, I've made from a piece of tissue paper with a coat of white paint.

p?i=24a83415e2fa2c30d889b8af938b68ed

And now the completed deckhouse, all but for the side supports and railings, which I'll fit once the deckhouse is on the deck. I guarantee I'd bend them as I fitted the deckhouse to the deck. I've drilled a small hole in the ventilators and painted it red, no idea if this is accurate, but it looks ok.

p?i=1efdaf1218b8c86f83aaf06b2ddd2ae3

And here is the ladder in place, now that was a fiddle, every time I moved the deckhouse to check the ladder was upright, it fell over.

Not much done at the weekend, actually got to see my youngest son and daughter in law on Saturday, last time was September last year. Good day in the sun with a beer and meal in Purley-on-Thames.

Anyway, back to the build. Applied the decals to the hull and started to add the ventilators etc to the deck. The decals were all individual letters, some having holes for where they were over portholes, quite thick decals and they needed and good coating of Micro-Sol to get then to conform to the surface.

As you can see, the masts were a little bit bent. But the old hot water treatment has got them, more or less, straight.
