reini
Special Hobby 1/72 CAC CA-9 Wirraway First, to set the mood here's a video about making Wirraways: Wirraway is an Australian variant of the NA-16. Over 700 were built and it was used mainly as a trainer but also as a fighter. The kit is Special Hobby 1:72. Couple of sprues. Looks decent, not too bad. Resin engine and cowling. I'm going with camo A. It says in the description that this particular plane might have had different scheme than shown here - Dark Ocean Blue & Dark Sea Gray upper surfaces. Sounds nice, I might go with that option.

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Great choice Reini, We still have a couple of airworthy examples down this way and I have seen it a few times lately, this was taken back in 2018 thought I have seen it flying a couple of times this year and as recent as a couple of weeks ago here in Canberra for the Air Force's 100th Anniversary flypast.
reini
@Romeo Alpha Yankee That is a fine looking plane Interior parts all cleaned up. Assembly done, in preparation for the painting. First I painted black and then followed by Hataka Interior Gray Green. Detail painting done and assembly done. I added rather simple Tamiya tape belts. Fuselage closed up. Wings added and putty applied. Let's wait for it to dry and clean up next Nothing major, just small blemishes here and there.
reini
Such a nice weather here and few days off, I had no choice but officially begin the BBQ season: How about you @Marlin - have you done some BBQ yet? Also some modelling, I did lot's of stuff but very little is shown off it. As it's mostly sanding, adding putty, cleaning, minor adjustments, parts fitting, some touch up painting etc etc. But I did mask the canopy, attach the engine also and pretty much apart from gluing the canopy and the engine cover - we are ready for some paint. Can't wait!

reini
Another day, another BBQ 😎 Some sweet potato fries and chicken wings/legs. Engine cowling glued and fitting of the underside intake. It needed some cutting in order to fit, it was basically straight line but there is a distinctive edge on the front of the landing gear bays. But after some surgery, it fitted nicely. Rear canopy is glued on lightly just as a mask, it will be removed for the finished build. We are ready for paint! 6
RidgeRunner
Very nice, and very quick, work!!! I like it Reini :). I love those blue and white Aussie markings :). Martin
reini
@RidgeRunner Thanks It's been rather smooth build so far. And yes - I agree - blue & white roundels look very good!
reini
Primed with grey. I read somewhere that RLM76 shouldn't be too far from RAAF Sky Blue. I really don't know but I guess it looks ok. As I mentioned, the airframe in question might have been painted in Dark Sea Grey & Dark Ocean Blue scheme instead of the Foliage Green & Earth Brown combo, so I'll go with that. These were the colours that seemed to come up from the Vallejo range when I converted the FS numbers. Also Life Colour makes RAAF specific colours and these colours came up again. Any opinions? I have no reference really, on how it should look.
reini
Masking is done - apparently this specific aircraft had a wavy demarcation line between the upper and lower colours. Grey is done. Let's give it few hours to dry and go on with the dark blue

I am not sure about Sky Type S. To my eye it has more of a greenish cast to it that RLM76. But then again, its only a model , and it's your build! Model on!
Graham Boak
It shouldn't be Sky anyway but RAAF Sky Blue, which certainly is bluish rather than greenish. Perhaps a purer blue than the greyish 76, but nearer than Sky!

reini
@Graham Boak Thanks, good to know. I'm bit scared to ask - but what's your opinion on my choices of Dark Sea Grey & Dark Ocean Blue? See below... Dark blue is painted... And masks are off!
Graham Boak
I saw this scheme in one of the Kookaburra RAAF volumes, thought it a lovely scheme and I must do a Wirraway like that one day. But I never did, and I believe that it is no longer considered accurate. Sorry, but you did ask.

I rarely have any recipes for my BBQ, I just add spices and sauces as I see fit and hope the end result is satisfying! For the chicken I usually dry rub them with appropriate seasoning (my favourite is Louisiana Cajun by Poppamies https://www.poppamies.fi/louisiana-cajun-rub/), put them for 45 minutes to an hour on indirect heat. I usually add some smoke to the mix just to add some flavour. Flip them over few times over the process. In the end, they should be crisp on the outside & juicy on the inside. Serve with your favourite wing sauce and enjoy Altough this time I forgot the seasoning but added some sweet fruity BBQ sauce in the end to make them bit sticky. Worked fine with the sour wing sauce. I like my burgers, wings and ribs and such as they are pretty straightforward and 'honest' BBQ food - and usually they taste little bit different every time I make them - and that's fine. Honestly, I'm not much of a chef but once you got few basic things down there really is no wrong way to BBQ.

Yeah, I did ask Thanks for the info anyways - sometimes you build models to be accurate as possible and sometimes you build them just for the fun of it. I guess this is turning out to be the latter
reini
The Aussie markings are on! The decals were thin and brittle but I managed to get them down without any major issues, I'll let it sit for a few hours and put on a matt coat. Some weathering after that. Maybe nothing too heavy, I kinda like the colours even if they might not be historically accurate

reini
Wash, cleaning up, adding some minor other weathering and gluing all the small bits. Took a good few hours still but I think we are done. Also posted in the gallery and more photos in the RFI: Thanks for looking!
