Knowing next to nothing about French Air Force aircraft of that era, are they actually bare metal finish or painted silver? Even the close ups show a remarkable uniformity of colour rather than the panel variations beloved by we modellers.

Perhaps we have become more accustomed to looking at models than the real thing and there are a lot of modellers who tend to exaggerate different panel colours.  However, if you look closely at my photos you can see differences.  There are colour photos on the Web which were taken on the same day:-

It looks to me to be different metals or different surface treatment, but not silver paint.

A fantastic set of pictures, thank you for sharing them with us.

Looking at the colour pictures in the links (especially the top link) the various shades of metal on the D's are more easy to see, though the F's (or at least one of them) do look more like they are painted aluminium, though it could easily be a trick of the light.
