Many years ago I built the Italeri Me 323 Gigant, (probably not very well), and it sat proudly on a shelf near a window. Then, one summers day (the window was open) it took an unexpected flight and ended up in the Great Plastic Granulator in the Sky :violin: This is the replacement.

It cried out for a load.

A bit more done on the Gigant. Before they're hidden, here are some Luftwaffe Erks.

As in indicator of size, the middle section of the wing is balanced - the outer sections have yet to be added.

Here we have the Famo chassis on the ramps.

Luckily I save the tail prop from my previous build as one is not provided in this issue.

Cockpit in and wing on.

The doors will be fixed open, but a lot later in the process.

The 323 was the powered variant of the 321, and here's one of those.

It was towed by a double He111 Zwilling, assisted by rockets under the wings. I have a Zwilling in the stash.
A little more done.

Got the tracks on the Famo.

Lots of stuff going on the wings.

Positioning them is hit and miss. The instructions indicate that there are moulded markings to aid correct positioning, but many are too feint for my eyes, and in any case, some of the parts are incorrectly annotated on the instructions too; part 99E being listed as 99C (IIRC). I had thought it would be more interesting to have the flaps and stuff at different angles, (as though at rest) but now the linkages do not touch where they should. Hey-ho!

It is unmanageably big and I fear damage will occur as I try to get on  :hide:

The Famo is built, though detail painting to follow.

The Carpet Monster took a side-light.

The Gigant is causing no-end of problems; lost pieces, broken parts, unclear positioning points, and me not reading the instruction sheet correctly and blindly following the sequence when I should have done it differently. But here's where I am.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I've not done any modelling for a week, concentrating on wargame rules and re-posting pictures in my ATF portfolio (just another 50 pages to go) following the demise of Picturetrail. I thought it about time to do a little more on the Gigant, and have been touching up by hand.

I can never resist trying out dioramas.

The baseboard is quite large and I think I could pose another aircraft on it. In the reference book there are pictures of Zwillings and Tant Jus nearby and I have both of these in my stash. Decisions, decisions...

I just did a quick whizz through the build as I must have missed the start in April.

I always wanted this kit, years ago. I have no idea where I would have put it, plus,

I was in the RAF at the time, so numerous house moves would have seen it being gradually destroyed.

Ah well, I have pictures of yours to drool over now. It looks grand. Especially as a vignette. (Posh, small diorama)

what a pity not even one sample survived the war...

They're closer than you think. I've read that a number were shot down into the Mediterranean.

Despite it's carrying capacity, the construction looks to be quite fragile, so a preserved one would have needed to be under permanent shelter.
