Interesting subject Dermot , enjoying this taking shape. That old Airfix kit is a right dog of a kit though.

Are you going to make up a vacum formed nose for this girl?  If you kept the sawn off cap you can plunge mould acetate sheet and keep at it till you get something useable.

Any how good luck and we will be following with interest,

Brian

Yes, Brian - it's a dog alright!

You are a brave man Dermot but it is coming along beautifully mate and should look superb in its bright colours. I bet you end up making a Buchan, Hurricane and Spitfire from the film to put alongside it!

Thank you Tony and @Grey Beema is spot on - there's a Spitfire and Buchon currently in production too!

So on to painting..

As mentioned before, the fit of the wings is quite tidy so decided to paint them separately. Colours are all Tamiya - Flat White, Flat Black and Lemon Yellow

Moment of truth...

Some bits to tidy up but mostly happy with that. From what I've read, this B-25 was painted quite quickly so can't imagine it was neat and tidy.

And as a little thought to the recently departed Nigel Heath, I had some carrot cake and a cup of tea to reward myself.

And on to paint on the main fuselage..this is Tamiya Light Green. It's a bit patchy which was exactly the look I was going for.

Masked and then the other side hit with a red/oange acrylic mix.

Here's the fuselage - my masking was just slightly off so it's not quite dead even along the length. Oh well

And with the wings dry-fitted.

I also started on a movie camera for the tail as this will be modelled in flight. Just made from random bits of sprue, etc.

I read about this aircraft a long time ago in a book about the making of the B of B film. I seem to remember one of the cameraman could fit very well in the rear gunner's position as he had lost both legs in an accident. Sounds like a very determined bloke 🙂

So hopefully getting this finished in time.

My biggest issue has been trying to plunge-mould the nose and turret domes. Lots of failed attempts using different clear plastics.

Will have another go this evening.

In the meantime, the flight crew is added (PJ Productions Transport crew)

And finished off the tail with cameraman. The tail clear part was sawn open and extended with clear plastic sheet.

Main canopy on and some panel lines added with pencil.

So fired up the homemade vac machine again....

Using the top of the Mitchell gun-nose as a mould..

So after about eight or nine attempts, burnt plastic (and fingers) and some swearing, I think I finally have something useable..

I also realised there are two roof windows in the nose but couldn't be bothered drilling those out now. So masked around them and painted the anti-glare panel.

  • Dermo245 changed the title to 1/72 B-25J Camera Ship - DONE

So with the last bits added in a mad dash to the line, she's done. A couple of goofs which I can see...

  • Football antenna & wing pitot not fitted at time of photos
  • Top observation dome is too small in height compared with the real thing...it was the best I could manage.
  • Kristal Klear still drying in the wing lights.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one - I like that I gave it a shot and tried a paint scheme that was way outside my comfort zone. But the kit is such a dog, it sucked the life out out me. I've yet to finish a base for it as it's going in an in-flight diorama.

Some more photos in the Gallery.

Thanks for all your kinds words and encouragement and cheers @Brad for a great GB idea which made me think outside the box.

Take care and happy modelling.

All the best,
Dermot
