Who regrets the passing of 1:96 scale? - Frog V-bombers

Recommended Posts

1:144 scale is just too small, 1:72 is too big, but 1:96 scale is right in the Goldilocks Zone.  Why did it go away?

A couple of old Frog kits which fit comfortably on my shelves.

They both look great. All you need now is Victor to complete the set.

As for 1/96, who knows. It's still around for boats and ships but the only aircraft models I can recall are Lindbergh and Glencoe. Like Frog both are long gone.

Oh wow! Very rare indeed! These look great.

I was lucky enough to get two Frog Vulcans last year. Sadly the Vulcan kit is the only kit made of a standard Vulcan B1, no manufacturer has made a B1 kit since unless you count the Lindberg prototype which is much more basic than this.

I find it a little odd that frog chose white for the vulcan given that XA891 was one of the airframes that only ever wore silver. Late 50s standards I guess

A quick search on Scalemates for 1:96 aircraft:

https://www.scalemates.com/search.php?fkSECTION[]=Kits&q=1%3A96&fkTYPENAME[]="Full kits"&fkCATNAME[]="Propeller"&fkCATNAME[]="Jets"

More were produced than I remembered. Many of these are reboxes, of course, but there are quite a few subjects.

Cheers,

Bill

Never really got established,  Tamiya did do a series of 1/100 kits as well.   @CliffB specialise in the approx scale.    And it's only really big subjects that are too big in 72nd. I'll @Adam Poultney

As he's a fan of V bombers and has some these as well.   Neat models :goodjob:

"Approx scale" is quite right.  1/100 does open up the opportunities quite a lot, with Heller and Revell (plus others), having been quite active.  You can't rely on the quoted scale though - for example some of Heller's "1/100" kits are actually much smaller, while most of UPC's "HO scale" offerings are in fact 1/100.  Generally speaking, 1/96 and 1/100 look fine together - at least to my eyes.

Then of course there are the really old "box scale" kits which may by chance give you fresh opportunities.  For example here's Monogram's Catalina (which comes out at 1/104), sitting alongside a 1/100 Nitto C-47.

The fact remains though, that your options are severely limited (relative to 1/72), and there is a particular dearth of British built subjects.  Hunting down suitable kits can, however, be part of the appeal!

Cheers.

I am surprised at the interest in these old Frog models but Adrian's "Nostalgic Tribute to Frog Model Kits" ran to 40 pages, so, perhaps I should have expected it.  Why I did not buy the Victor when it was readily available I shall never understand.

Sorry, Adam, I did not know that XA891 was supposed to be silver.  The box was labelled "Modelled from Official Plans" and I did not question it. 🙂

Thanks for all your kind remarks.

The FROG Airliners were to the same scale as well. I have most of them built, but in need of some TLC after all these years. I like them a lot. The box art is beautiful.

Didn't Revell of Germany re-box the Frog V-Bombers back in the 1980s?

No - those were Lindberg's. The last Frog V-bombers I saw on sale new were in Modeltoys, Portsmouth in about 1978/9 and I believe that they were some that had been held back by Frog as spares sources. The original moulds had gone by then.
