Marlin
Hi. This will be my entry into this GB. I'll be building the Russian Navy Tu-134UBL training plane. 001 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The Tu-134 UBL is a training airplane developed by the Tupolev design office in the early 1980's, based on the successful Tu-134 passenger liner with twin engines in the rear. Unlike the standard plane, the Tu-134UBL had a special nose and radome designed to simulate the supersonice Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 bombers. This aircraft has the task to train bomber pilots to navigate, land and fly on sensor readings in simple and complicated weather conditions. Simultaneously, the Tu-134UBL provides instruction and training for up to 12 cadets located in the cabin in three rows. A total of 90 units were built. I'll be building the Russian Navy version of the TU-134UBL "Black Pearl". https://cdn.jetphotos.com/full/5/71022_1528110738.jpg from 859th War and Re-Traning Centre of the Russian Navy Aviation, airfield Eysk, 2019. https://goo.gl/maps/qzsnETcdAtJYhnzBA To be started on Saturday..... /Bosse

Marlin
Hi. Well today is Saturday 17 April. And it's time to go to work on my Black Pearl. This is what I have to work with. Fuselage 002 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Wings 003 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Stand and clear parts. 004 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Decals, I think Begemot does them for Zvezda. 005 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr You can chose from three paint schemes from the box, two Russian Airforce and One Russian Navy, which is the one I'll do. 006 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 007 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And Plastic has already been cut from the sprue. I've got the fuselage sections out, and I've painted the inside with Russian Emerald green. 008 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 009 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The kit doesn't come with any cockpit. And the cockpit windows are very tiny. But some colours I think is in order. Next I'll glue the windows in and I think I'll have the fuselage closed up before dinnertime today. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. Day 1 on this build is coming to an end, but what a day I've had. I've decided to build this in flying configuration using the kit provided stand. The kit's landing gears are so delicate I think it'll not last. So that was one of the first part I glued together. 010 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I think I'll spray it silver, and then paint a St Andrews flag on it, since that's the symbol of the Russian Navy. I got the windows in just fine with no more hassle than I had to sand down some punch out marks on the clear strips. And after that I could glue up the fuselage. 011 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr A short while after that I've glued the bottom section of the wings in place. 012 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And since I had my steam up, the wings quickly followed. 013 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 014 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I think it's the first time since I was a kid that I could glue up an entire aircraft in just one day. I still have to fit some small bits and the engines. The engines had to have some paint on the inside of them, so I'll finish them tomorrow. And since I'm leaving the undercarriage off this time the kit only have 40 parts to glue together. But fittingly it'll have around 60 decals to place after it has been painted. But painting will have to wait a few days To be continued..... /Bosse

Marlin
Hi, all and thanks Brad. I've had a very productive weekend. I've masked all windows with Maskol, and I hope it'll work. 015 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr When that had set it was time for primer. 016 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr If the primer is dry this evening I'll paint the first layer of "Egg-plant Blue-Grey". To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. I got to lay the first layer of Eggplant BlueGrey yesterday. 017 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've used AKAN acrylics which is more and more becoming my go-to colours. This one covered real well at the first layer, but I think three layers are in order. Then I'll have to mask and paint the leading wing edges in metal and some other small stuff. To be continued..... /Bosse
Adam Poultney
How sturdy is the attachment of the model to the stand?
Marlin
Thanks Adam. It's quite sturdy. Actually I'm using it as a paint/drying stand right now. /Bosse
Marlin
Hi all. This weekend we opended up the cottage for the season. Actually we don't ever close it up, but during spring and summer we use it almost every weekend. And this weekend we got runnig water in the tap again, so it didn't matter that much that the weather was a bit overcast and cold. 018 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr We only have running water in the cottage from May 1 to mid October. The rest of the year you have to bring your own drinking water. We have a well where we can get water for flusing the toilet and doing the dishes. But I've not tested the water if it's fit for drinking so during the cold season we bring our own. I've bought a collapsable work table, that can fold up and doesn't take more space than a suitcase when folded up. 019 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr So now I'm set for this seasons renovation work at the cottage. And it can take a 1000lbs of load, so I guess it'll hold if I sit on it to. I also got a rather cool wall light up. 020 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I try to use the grill every weekend when we're at the cottage. And this Saturday we had some grilled salmon. Yummy @reini @trickyrich 021 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr But as usual, even a great weekend come to an end. And yesterday when we got home again I put the second clear coat on the "Black Pearl" 022 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 023 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The engine nacelles was already coated twice, so I put some decals on them. 024 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr More decals will come during the week. To be continued..... /Bosse

Marlin
Thanks Rich. And you guessed right, Spring and Summer is coming to the Frozen North once again. No risk of a burn-out before September, but perhaps a burn mark or two. /Bosse

Marlin
Hi. Yesterday I had planned to put on the decals on the Black Pearl. But I had to remove the Maskol I've used to mask the clear parts. And I got bits of paint following the Maskol of the aircraft. 025 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 026 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 027 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr So instead of putting some decals in place, I had to prime the areas where I'd lost the paint. And today I'll have to paint the real colour. 028 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr But perhaps I can put the decals on this coming weekend. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi all. Yesterday when I got home from work I felt the urge to put some decals on the Black Pearl. So said and done. Now it has it's Russian colours. 029 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The Tricolor band is in two pieces. 030 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I got some small trouble aft of the engines where the band goes over an outlet of some kind. The second band was easier to get in place. 031 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I've added the Russian Navy text, and the St Andrews flag. I'll do the reverse side this evening, and then I have around 40-ish stencils to do as well. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi Reverse side done as well. 032 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'll do the stencils when I get home from work. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi all. I'm done with the decals on the Black Pearl. 033 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 034 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 20210508_150957 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'll clean up all left over decal solutions and then I'll seal the decal with some clear varnish. And then a coat of satin varnish, will be the best, matt doesn't seem right on this aircraft. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi all. The "Black Pearl" is now finished. 036 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 037 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 038 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr This was a very nice and no fuss build, and I really like how it turned out. I've still got two small blade antennas to glue to it. But that will have to wait until the renovation work in our apartment building is over. This one will not go into the display cabinet, but instead it'll be boxed up and wait until I can unpack all my kits again in late 2022. /Bosse
