IBG 1/700 HMS Harvester

Hi, I have decided to restart my ship modelling after a break to try painting (not very well) 28mm Napoleonic Cavalry. I like the small IBG destroyers and have not done HMS Harvester yet.

spacer.png

As you can see from the parts i have already put a coat of dark deck grey from Sovereign Hobbies on the needed parts.

I have a bit of a dilemma with the colour scheme, as the ship is depicted as in 1943 but the colour call outs are for pre 43 colours (W.A. white blue and green) whereas I have bought Jamie's 1943 Western approaches set which is white, B30 and B55.

I will also be replacing the 4.7", 20mm, TT and boats with Micro Master 3d printed ones, the pom pom and Carley floats will be Flyhawk, and the Hedgehog is also a resin replacement (can't remember whose). All paints will Jamie's Colourcoats. Wish me luck.

Perhaps you could find when Harvester was repainted in 1943?  Possibly both are right for different times.  I suspect that at this stage of the war the ship will not have been significantly modified at this point - certainly there are no hints in the plan above, not even Hedgehog.

Hi Graham, this is a kit of the modified escort version, A turret removed and replaced by Hedgehog ( the green box below B turret) and Y turret removed for added depth charges.

I am pretty sure the colour chart is wrong similar to most of the trumpeter colour call outs.

If you can get to Jamie's web site for the information section even the free chart information is invaluable to help interpret the complex colours of the Royal Navy during war time. :book:

I would go as D white, E as B30 WA Green, C as B55 WA blue as on the chart HTH.

Hi Beefy, thanks for the advise, I have already bought all of Jamie's files and still struggled to match this scheme. I had been thinking along the lines you mention but I thought of the B55 as the green and B30 as the blue, the paints i have B30 is much bluer than B55.

Harvester was sunk on 11th March 1943 before B30 & B55 were introduced (in May 1943). There is a well known colour photo of her in the Canadian archives. It seems to be dated and captioned 1941 by them but given the Type 271 radar fit would I think in practice be after her Feb 1942 refit. This photo appears to show the fit of the kit so white, WA Blue and WA green look correct (allowing for the vagaries of contemporary colour photography). I think this is in practice a 1942 photo. I don't seem to have any photo of her in (early) 1943:

Hi Dickrd, thank you. Your research abilities far outweigh mine. WA blue and green it is then, and thank you for the photo, it will help me greatly when i get to the dreaded weathering stage. today will mostly be spent masking for the Semtex.

Hi, I have sprayed the decks, masked and sprayed my idea of Semtex, masked again and sprayed the white. That's where my disaster's started. For spraying I use a cheap KK Moon airbrush and when spraying the hull everything went haywire, one second I couldn't get any paint to flow the next the front of the hull was completely flooded. I think I had messed up when cleaning the airbrush (i got a phone call and forgot to go back to spraying) . So to give it a good clean I stripped it down and put it in my new (never used before) ultrasonic cleaner with water and a few drops of washing up liquid, didn't touch it. So being as it is enamel paint, I cleverly put it in with Self levelling thinners 🤪. I now have an airbrush that will never work again as the plastic basket melted and so did the seals. After that senior moment, I have found a spare hull and will endeavour to get back on track using my Harder and Steenbeck Infinity. Hope to update soon.

Hi, finally got some paint on, still needs a few touch ups.

spacer.png

The WA blue seems vey pale compared to the picture Dickrd posted, but that is a couple of coats of Colourcoats WA blue, also put a coat of WA green on the etch that needs it.

After touch ups i will make a start on building, Finally.

The Colourcoats WA Light Blue "hits the numbers" at 55% RF as the paint was nominally supposed to be, but it's clear from photographic records that some ships used a paint somewhat darker than this. As Richard's photograph indicates, the paint actually applied to Harvester appears to be closer in tone to something like B6, although it's fairly saturated. Someone went a bit heavy handed on the blue pigment mixing that up I think!

Thanks Jamie, I got up this morning and decided to start the hull all over again with a spare one. I decided to mix WA blue with quite a bit of B30 and got a mix I liked. Sprayed the white, blue and green in just a couple of hours and finally started some assembly.

Hoping to get stuck into some of the etch, so I can move on.

A little more done today, MicroMaster main guns and torpedo tubes, started on the etch, but as always with the IBG destroyers I am severely struggling with the search light platform barrier.

spacer.png

I have paintes the MicroMaster Oerlikons and the Flyhawk boats, finally feel like it's getting somewhere. Also had AK's weathering set arrive today, so I may give them a try.#

Hi, just a little more done

spacer.png

I have failed miserably with the search light platform shield, and also destroyed both my spares, I just cannot get the curves to go how I want. Trying to think of an alternative.

spacer.png

The folds are marked for the right angles but nothing after that. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

I had a similar problem with their HMD Glowworm. All I can suggest is to use part D8 to set the angles. HTH

I agree, whenever I have to bend PE to fit onto a platform etc. I try to use the platform as a template.

I have tried using the platform as a template but still no success, which bothers me as I have already built Glowworm, Hotspur and Ithuriel and don't remember any problems. I WILL work it out.

Hi, finally managed the searchlight platform, had to use 2 parts of the broken ones. The only difference is that I used tweezers instead of the Tamiya etch pliers I recently bought. I have managed to do a little more, but have just noticed I have broken the barrel from the front main gun, I will spray up a new one and replace the whole turret as I can find no sign of the missing barrel. I'm glad I chose this to get back into my ships, rather than my Flyhawk J class, which I want to do as HMS Kimberley. I have and probably will make more mistakes but I am treating this one as a learning curve and will rebuild it once I am more comfortable.spacer.png

I will continue forward as I get the spare time.

Hi Mick

Late to the party once again, but congratulations on fabulous paint job - hugely impressive at this scale

Sorry to hear about the searchlight platform surround and good save if it's fixed.  I'd have gone for some plasticard to remedy

All hugely impressive

@smyfe going back to your PE bending problem. I’ve just stated the IBG 1/700 HMS Ilex, first foray into this tiny scale, and had to do the same bending. I have had a reasonable success using tweezers and my thumb nail. Hold the PE on the bend line at the start of the curve and gently draw my thumb nail along the PE, this created a curve, which I gauge by eye, as a fit for the deck. I am, however, finding this scale a HUGE challenge, I’ve got one more ship (Flyhawk HMS Naiad) in this scale and then I doubt I’ll ever build another. Your results with this build are stunning.

Hi, thanks Rob, I have been watching your builds, I only wish I had half your skill. Jon, thanks < I will give that a try. Never say never lol, I have built the Niaid and it is a dream to build, But an Optivisor or some other magnifier is a must. In 3 years my eyes have got 5 times worse than they were, I am so used to my Optivisor I nearly went shopping with it on my head. I've been watching your Ilex build and it's coming along great. My next build will be HMS Kimberley from Flyhawks J class.

Mick.

I know exactly what you mean, I’d be lost without my magnifying light.
