Sherman 75mm travel lock and muzzle covers?

As the early M4 / M4A1 series didn't have a travel lock on the front glacis, was there an interior travel lock that connected the gun to the turret roof? If so, would the barrel point straight ahead, up or down?

I'm looking to build an early Sherman III to serve as "the designated cargo" for a tank transporter.

The Sherman Minutia site, I looked but can't find anything about an internal lock for the gun, just this diagram that shows a hand wheel is used to elevate the gun:
