Douglas F4D-1 Skyray, VMF(AW)-115

Kit: Tamiya Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (#60741)

Scale: 1/72

Paints: Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Metal Colour

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, oil paints, Vallejo weathering products, Ammo Mig weathering products

First carrier-launched aircraft to hold the world's absolute speed record - and first US Navy/USMC to exceed mach 1 in level flight. Not a mean feat by such a little known jet. But what a beautiful lines and very nice kit by Tamiya. Even the decals worked fine, after enough applications of Tamiya Decal adhesive and X-20A.

Really enjoyed this smooth build, can't wait to do the same kit in 1/48 soon!

I always wondered why Tamiya made a kit of this rather off-beat, less-than-well known aircraft. Maybe I am underestimating the market for early USN jets.

But it looks kind of cool and you certainly did a great job the way you built and weathered it.

@Doc72 Ive wondered it too. When these planes were new, I bet they had lots of appeal for modellers - but currently I find it hard to believe they can compete with Spitfires and Mustangs. So no idea why Tamiya has this in its catalog - but I'm glad it does :)

Well, let's be content that sometimes the nerdy mould-makers can overrule the narrow-minded accountants. BTW, in a similar vein Fujimi has made a F7U Cutlass. It would look great next to the Skyray.

Right! I almost got one recently, but someone else beat me to it. No matter, I got plenty of other planes in the same era, for example Demon by Sword, which would go nicely with Skyray too.

That is a great looking "Ford"! :clap2:  I really do love those crazy designs from that era; wonderfully weird even if a technological dead-end.    Yours looks like a hard-working veteran for sure.   Thanks for posting her here!

Tamiya's 1/48 model of this plane is a nice kit too.  I wish I had a "Gut-less Cutlass" in 1/48 to display beside her:

Thanks! Yeah, I already started the 1/48 :D

Yeah this bird didn't serve for too long to get really dirty and nasty - but after seeing couple images in the interwebs (especially the Marines ones) that looked bit more grubby than usual I decided I would go down that route. I'll probably do a cleaner approach on the 1/48 version :)

Yours is looking great!
