Masking over decals

Any one with any ideas gratefully received.

Have a problem where I have to fix the decal which then designates where a line starts for a paint detail. Then have to mask over the decal.

My idea is two coats of the Aqua Varnish. But any other ideas & tips will be helpful.

De-tack the masking tape before you start, the tape can still lift the decal even though it's been cleared.

I'd play safe and go with parafilm. Regardless of what you coat it with, the adhesion of the decal will still be the weak point.

Would copying the shape of the decal in masking tape and using that instead of the decal work? That's what I did to locate the Star and Bar and surrounding paintwork on a Mustang that's on the go at the moment.

Any chance you could use plastic foil to cover it? The one used for food? I've done that in the past when I didn't want to risk paint lifting.

I wouldn't even think about masking over decals, no matter the clear coats. 😱

 

I remove decals using masking tape--it's extremely effective!

ParaFilm works quite well over decals

Damp paper masks work well for me. Using normal A4 printer paper, cut the mask to the shape, put in water to soak up the water and then lay the paper on a towel to remove excess water. The mask then sticks on using surface tension with no damage to the paint or decal. The mask will fall off after mybe 10 minutes as the water dries out. I found this was the only way to mask different hi-shine Alclad coats on top of each other on my NF-104 in the RFI section.
