Renard R-31, Azur 1/72 - decals applied

Recommended Posts

Inspired by Heather (thank you very much madam 😊) I decided to build this Belgian beauty.

Not that many parts in a large box:

And I started with the cockpit parts:

Those white triangles are just pieces of thin plastic to cover the ejector pin marks - difficult to fill and file in places like these and I am a lazy guy. The seats were thinned a bit to be more in scale and the rear joystick was made from some Evergreen - the original was "thick as a brick".

Between interior paint layers I prepared the tailplanes

And then I started sanding the wing halves to achieve a thin trailing edge. I managed to break the bottom wing half in the center - in fact it helped me with the sanding.

All interior parts have been painted - in fact I have all paints the instructions suggest to use. Some leftover gauge decals were used to complete the instrument panels and the rest is from the box.

Hi Marcel,

also inspired by @Heather Kay's build, I've got one of these in my stash, too.

Hope you won't mind if I follow along and take notes?

Great start, and the interior looks amazing - I love the shading around the framework.

Looking forward to seeing your next instalment.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your kind words. I have used several layers: Gunze black Surfacer, Gunze base white in the frame centers (and other places) and then a thinned coat of buff colour. All the "triangles" were masked using Tamiya tape and White Aluminium was sprayed on the rest of the cockpit. Then the tape was removed and gloss varnish was applied overall. A heavily thinned mix of black and brown synthetic paint was used as a wash and finally a coat of matt varnish. Then small details were painted using different Tamiya acrylics. It sounds more complicated than it is in fact.

Anyway please feel free to comment anything. I hope to add some images at the end of the week.

Hi Marcel,

thanks for describing your method for the interior - it's given a superb finish, with the darkening in the corners of the frame triangles being incredibly effective!

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Cheers,

Mark

I am trying to solve the upper surface colour:
- the instructions say Gunze H-80 that I have - but it seems to be more green and less khaki
- different charts state that Tamiya XF-51 should be the same, I have it as well but it seems to be too brown and not that green
- then I tried Tamiya XF-62 and I like it best (tried also to add a few drops of XF-58 but I prefer just XF-62

Any advice?

If it were me I’d go for the one I liked. For many reasons there is no such thing as accurate colour unless you have access to the original and quite a bit of specialised hardware. So I tend to go for plausible colour, if it looks right it probably is; and failing that if you’re happy with it then that’s good too.

You are definitely right Marklo.

Anyway the wing after a layer of Surfacer 1,000, seems to be OK.

The aileron actuator rods are longer than they should be and they were shortened by 2,5 milimetres

And during the weekend I closed the fuselage, added the tailplanes and U/C legs plus the radiator.

Surfaced 1000 applied to show places that need more attention - well not that many so I can continue.

Well time to test the colour. Tamiya XF-51 over a black base (Gunze Finishing Surfacer)with white "marbling" (Gunze Base White). Gloss coat and decals, some more layers to follow: gloss coat, oils, matt varnish, Tamiya weathering powders...

That is looking rather lovely! for being one colour i's say it's almost mesmerising, looking forward to see the thing together.

Btw there is a full size replica under construction at the army museum in Brussels. I sadly haven't been there for over a year now so i'm not sure about it's current state, last time i went the fuselage skeleton was done and in progress of receiving the metal front panels. Some parts of the wing to if i recall correctly. It will be a static display only but it's constructed using original blueprints so it will be quite spectacular to see the thing in the flesh again as none survive.

Hopefully the paintjob turns out as well as this :)

Thank you. I found several pictures of the replica being built, good job!

Now I have to beg Special Hobby/Azur to make the Fairey Fox and/or Firefly - well not THAT Firefly but the lovely biplane 😀

Great progress, Marcel, and the finish on the wing is spectacular! Makes me want to start on mine, but I need to finish a few things first :)

I'm off to Google the replica, now!

Oh, and

there would be quite a few different variants of those to build so they would sure sell me a few :)

Looking brilliant! I love how you're achieving the subtlest variation in shades, its just enough to create a change in the colours without suggesting that they're anything other than olive green over grey. Masterful work, if I may say so!

Cheers,

Mark

The fuselage/tailplanes painted and varnished with Gunze super clear gloss.

I am not that happy with the nose panels but I would probably leave them as they are...

  • Marcel changed the title to Renard R-31, Azur 1/72 - decals applied

Decals applied. There are not many of them so it was an easy job - and they were easy to settle down with some Mr. Setter (no Mr. Softer needed). And as you can see I didn’t forget to use the correct Sioux Rouge - well is this politically correct?
