Italeri Porsche 911 (993) Turbo

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

Latest completion. Story behind this one is that a couple of decades ago I was really into building NASCAR models - this was before the time of specialist car model paints like Zero and Gravity. So advice on an American NASCAR model forum was to use nail polish! Used it on a couple of kits (after plucking up the courage to lurk around the 'ladies areas' in Boots and such places to buy the stuff!!) and it worked well.

Fast forward 20 some years and I was sorting out the model room and came across a box of the stuff I'd long forgotten about so thought I'd grab a cheap kit out of the stash to see if it still worked. So this Italeri 993 Turbo became the unwilling victim. It's a pretty nasty kit to build tbh, plenty of fettling to get bits to fit, and there's no locating pegs to fit the body to chassis, it has to be glued together, and despite using superglue it sprung apart a couple of times when I was finishing it, so supergluing it back together has resulted in some fairly untidy joins. I also lost the rear roof spoiler and screen wiper during the build so those were delete options on the real car....!! Also the ride height was a bit tractor like, and as the wheels had to be glued on too, I bodged it to get the stance looking better - and completely forgot to put brake discs and calipers back on before I superglued the wheels on!

On the other hand the nail varnish worked really well again even after all this time - sprayed really easily thinned with Mr Color levelling thinner (rather than the cellulose I used to use) and then polished up very nicely after flatting down with micromesh and using the three Tamiya compounds. Two things I like about the stuff is that it polishes up so well with no clear coat needed and the metallic flakes are just about the finest I've come across in any type of paint.

There were many times it nearly ended up in the bin (actually it did once but I dug it out again determined not to let it beat me!) but though it's defnitely not my finest build, I quite like it if only because it's one of my favourite 911 shapes.

Anyway, pics - the first is one outside in the sunshine just after I finished polishing it to show the shine!

Hang on a minute 🤔...you've actually completed a build....nah never i must be seeing things 🤭..Well despite your issues with the kit mate that looks well smart and I really like the colour choice that's a beautiful blue with a cracking finish 🙂. Interesting choice to use nail varnish but it obviously works well something to consider in the future perhaps 🤔. Nice choice of interior colour as well Keith as most people would have painted it black but I much prefer the tan personally 🙂. So I reckon your next completed build should arrive sometime in 2025 ? Seriously mate great work well done indeed 👏 👍 👌

Hang on a second....are you saying that you've posted two finished builds in one day 🤔....If that's correct then I need to lye down for a while....jeez I must be hallucinating 🙄....Oh and I've just been caught by Mr's J mooching through her box of nail varnish she asked me if there was anything I needed to talk to her about....I explained the reason for looking to which she replied... " Of course dear " 😬👍

Keith i really think you should slow down a little with your build speed mate otherwise I can see burnout happening 🙄. Seriously though keep em coming Keith I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes to see your work 😉👍

Hi Keith,

I image nail varnish is pretty tough when cured, judging by the way my daughters nails seem to last before cracking/flaking.

She is fastidious, as soon a a chip appears, off the varnish comes...

Lovely colour, BTW,

Cheers,

Alan.

I remember reading about using nail polish,  but at the time I never had an air brush so never tried it.  Now I have a air brush and having seen you flawless results, I think I'll have to give it a go.  Thanks for the inspiration - Andy

I've heard of using nail polish, but for some reason blue didn't occur to me (not tried it myself). Great job with the build, especially if all I've heard about Italeri is correct (not tried one of those either). The end result is much better than a quick build has any right to be, and the paint looks superb. 👍
