A Couple of Gals - Two Revell B-17Gs

Recommended Posts

CedB, coming along nicely--believe @bbudde is correct about the Mickey radome--my understanding is that this early bomb aiming radar was used with limited success in bad weather by USAAF crews.  Some google search links from previous research are listed below. Your build is looking fantastic... best, Erwin

I’m going to be wrong but does that mean either fit this (61) part or the ball turret? Maybe this part is for neither of the schemes in this boxing so use the turret?

Lovely fettling by the way. 🙌

Johnny

Yep, that's it Johnny :)

No ball turrets? Who wants that??

Now where would the fun be in that. :D.

Both look seriously good to me.

Alistair

Quite right Ali, reading ahead is for wimps (or clever people!) :D

That kind of looks like a radar dome Ced. Did Revell produce a 'Pathfinder' version of this kit?

Ah, thanks Cookie :)

RADAR guided bombs? Cool.

Looking really smart so far Ced! I never knew a B-17 interior had so much wood. It's amazing what I learn on this forum. The wood grain you achieved is just right for 1:72, kudos on that.   :)

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks Bill :)

Me neither - I guess if it works…

Well that's me worn out after a five page catch up. Slow down that chap!

I've learnt things here and been impressed by other things so a result in my book.

What's better than a B-17? Two B-17's! I love them. I shall pop by again.

Thanks Pete :)

As above Ced this looks like mickey radome. Long ago Paragon did resin conversion in different scales for the older kits.  I also didn't know that they did a pathfinder version with the kitts. Btw nice work on the interieur.

Cheers

Thanks Ben :)

In a moment of work-avoiding google-mapping last week, I worked out that I used to live just 500m off-of the threshold of runway 19 at RAF Attlebridge back in the 90’s. If your Grandfather could tolerate warm beer he probably drank in the village inn, the Parson Woodforde at Weston Longville - it’d have been the closest pub to the base.  :D

Wow, more memories, thanks Steve :)

Ditto.

In a rare case of planning I'm going to look ahead and spray some aluminium…

Be careful with that planning stuff - you never know where it might lead you.

Thanks Bill - I don't think it'll be a habit! :D

Now a pile of plastic with some aluminium bits:

I'm expecting to have to detail the assemblies so just a 'base coat'.

One tip: make sure you keep your guide away from the spray:

I think when they mention "paint internals" they don't mean on the paper Ced.

you did wear a mask though, didn't you?  Got to follow those instructions to the letter

The interior is stunning Ced, glad we have this WIP to admire it before it's closed up.

I'm sure Grandpa Harry spent some time at the Parson Woodforde then! Great story, thanks Steve.

Thanks hendie and Pete :D

I didn't wear a mask (or a snorkel), as usual, but I did have the booth exhaust out of the window for the first time this year!

Worth it, even if it'll never be seen again…

Sorry for the thread drift Ced;

It’s website says it has a little area of the bar dedicated to the memory of the WW2 aircrew

Parson Woodforde - B24 photos

No need, ever, to apologise for thread drifts in my builds Steve - I love 'em :)

Looks like a nice pub too - perhaps some of the boys can stay there when delivering the completed models.

Carry on Ced, you are doing  fine job there.

Still lots of parts to sand , prime paint stick etc.

Simon.

Thanks Simon :)

Hopefully the sanding will be finished soon, ish.

More wood:

And brass for the cartridge shells.

What do you mean you can't see it? Took me ages…

Brass on the tail gun cartridges too, and some leather on the saddle:

Gunmetal. Lots of it:

51128908229_63d73fd737_z.jpg

All AK paste, of course.

If you want an even finish you can thin this with white spirit and get a nice paint-like consistency:

…but hey, does it cover!

Around the windows.

They 'click' nicely into place so thinned Canopy glue was wicked into the gaps:

Waist guns assembled. I decided that the belts probably wouldn't bend much so I stuck those in first:

51129115419_0fff8e5416_z.jpg

I put a dob of Gator's Grip on the mount (dries clear - they're in the window), positioned the gun in the hole and wiggled it until it met the belt, then applied a dot of Contacta to, hopefully, glue the belt to the gun:

51129127509_1e2ba874f7_z.jpg

51129069951_0a39b718c1_z.jpg

Ish.

Of course the results will be there for all to see, as will the detailing on the radio room:

51129452703_01c71bbef9_z.jpg

:weep:

Ball turrets next.

With that and all the mention of wood, I'm surprised my inner Finbarr is behaving itself.

I'm obviously not feeling myself lately.

Must get a grip.

Fnaar, snurf, yurkk yurkk! :wicked:

Lovely detail painting, Ced

It will all be out of sight, but we'll all know it's there :)

Ciao
