I managed to get the cowlings on with some wiggling:

52112517718_94b713a9a4_z.jpg

Worth the practice; the rod thingies at the front foul on the inside of the cowling so, once on, they won't come off again. You can see one was springy and had to be taped. It's not clear where the contact points are so I blobbed some TET around the back of the cowlings AND inside the front. Fingers crossed.

To avoid this on Jim's kit I cleaned up the ends these bits:

52116864929_f8e1907e38_z.jpg

There's PE to go on (ggnnnghhh):

52116661628_f9feeaeb02_z.jpg

…including some tiny bits. #50 appear to be name plates and there's a spare. Uh oh:

52116672653_a5e26c7059_z.jpg

Rolled with the mandrel:

52116635871_eff06b7d7e_z.jpg

…then, with a drop of Gator's Thin on the casing, placed on with a pick up pencil. Of course I dropped one.

The HT cables have been painted ready for the big struggle:

52116702933_bd91dd72f3_z.jpg

Grey cables from the IPMS Netherlands walk around. Once that's dry I'll gird my loins and try to fix them on.

Looking forward to it. Not.

I forgot to tell you that yesterday I went Microlighting:

52117069968_b611a7e690_c.jpg

First time for me and the smallest thing I've flown in. JUST about big enough for me but the fuselage was about the same width as me so when I looked down and right - nothing! The rate of climb on this was impressive and we had a nice fly about. Although I remembered to wear warm clothes the 65mph wind up me trouser legs was, er, chilling!

The field's not far from us so I may go back.

Anyway, this PE turned out to be a right pain. Look at the 'tops' of the PE here:

52116702933_bd91dd72f3_z.jpg

There's actually two pieces there which got me, but the main thing was the bending. I stuck one end to the part first:

52117006258_989e72bd2c_z.jpg

…then, when that was dry, tried to bend the thing to shape and 'attach' the HT leads:

52117020611_474d84ec56_z.jpg

52117533380_f127998643_z.jpg

Hopeless. The leads seem to be far too long and trying to cut them to length resulted in the whole thing popping off. Again.

Sorry Jim, to retain my sanity I think those bits will have to be 'omitted'.

I generally don't mess with those PE bits for that reason. I suspect lead wire might answer better in the scale, if anyone can even see them at all.

Microlight  Aargh. One thing I’ve never been tempted to try, although we did get a primary glider ( Grasshopper ) on the gliding school occasionally. We did circuits in it and it was quite draughty especially in the winter and it was  advisable to tuck ones trousers into ones socks.

Hope the olive drab on the nacelles turn out to be all on the insides.

Stay safe

Complete with mandatory aviators as well

I tried flexwing microlighting once.  It was all so wrong!

Want to turn left - move the bar to the right.  Want to turn right - move the bar to the left.

Steering it on the ground was especially hard!  Push the left foot forward to turn right.  Push the right foot forward to turn left.

I understood the theory of why it worked like that well enough - but it meant overcoming years of training….

"…tuck ones trousers into ones socks"? I wish I'd thought of that. Or known it was going to be so draughty!

To be honest I may have had my feet too far out?

Give it a go Terry. It's flying, but perhaps not as we know it!

I still cherish my Aviators, bought when I started my PPL. They're Photochromic so great for driving too. Love 'em.

You're right about the flexwing - all wrong.

The worse thing for me was the fact that you hang from a gimble so, instead of bumping up and down you 'swing' side to side and back to front.

Weird, but fun.

More PE :(

I realised I hadn't done the vent frames on one wing (probably got fed up with it) so they were done.

The frame inside the rear of the u/c bay was also inserted, although I'm not sure they quite fit:

52119058713_6145f527d8_z.jpg

There are also panels for the top and bottom of the cowlings:

52119083938_fe317a65bb_z.jpg

See them? Quite.

I've sliced off the flash where they go but they need a slight bend and I got fed up, again.

Why are they needed? To represent the rivets around the panel.

What do you mean you can't see the rivets? :smirk:

This arrived this morning:

52119568270_1190235eac_z.jpg

EBMA's Wing Jig as seen in @Heather Kay's current build. Looks like a 'must have' especially for tool tarts like me.

What's in the box?

52119316114_3778e07f3e_z.jpg

Crikey!

That 'instructions' slip says to download the picture instructions from their website.

All ten pages of them.

I may be gone some time…

When they're dry most of the bits go in the drawer - neat. I like neat.

Now you've completely lost me. What are those jigs for?

The mojo certainly seems to be returning Ced. Those wings are looking good.

Wings!

You know, when you're trying to get the tailplane just right and also when you push the wings onto the fuselage and they're wobbly?

The jig let's you position the wings up/down AND front/back and supports them there.

Ooh, ooh, and for holding on those upright fins like on Lancasters and the like.

Heather put me onto it in this post.

See here for more pics.

And, of course, it's another tool to compensate for my lack of skill :)

Ah hendie, it may be that :D

Although I've yet to reacquaint myself with my drawers (oooer missus) and I don't think there's that much space.

Thanks G, yes, almost! :)

Turned over the page of the instructions and I'm on the last stages! Mostly the u/c and then bits and pieces that might get knocked off.

So, wheels:

52121176466_ee8106752f_z.jpg

Initial coat of Mr Hobby 'Tire Black' that will get toned down with other, lighter coats. I'm not too keen on this paint, especially trying to take the top off the bottle, so after this the remainder got binned - one more choice not to worry about.

Jim's kit will be wheels down so I can follow the instructions, but mine will be wheels up.

How will that work?

Then I remembered I'd built this kit before as Memphis Belle:

52120154257_ffaa59aba3_z.jpg

I've also just watched the film again. Good movie.

The wheels on Belle seemed to go in well:

52121212813_4ffa7d48ba_w.jpg 52121213253_bb49c13007_w.jpg

…so I checked that build. Seems quite straightforward:

You know what, that happened to me on a Charity Track Day at Marham, before they converted to funny tarmac and stranger shelters etcetera.

Middle of the field, a somewhat elderly looking bus.

Organising lady inside the bus.

Skinny white plastic looking things with long tapery wings and a cover over the the seating area outside.

"How much?" says I.

"Are you joining?" says she.

Only here for the track day or I think I would.

£30 and sit in the front, lid shuts and whoosh.

Heaven in five or six minute slices.

Really really took over my track day experience, mmmmmmm.

PS. I'm not kidding - this is an actual product from GSI Creos. I find it indispensable not only for Mr. Hobby/Mr. Color bottles, but also Tamiya and any others that use this type of bottle and cap.

I just bought one of these - well worth it - any Tamiya pot that's been opened once or twice before is nearly impossible to open again.

Wonderful progress Ced, ceiling and museum worthy for sure.
