Here's my SAAF Harvard Mk.III, Encore boxing of the Academy kit, OOB.  Very nice kit to build.  Suitable for most ages.  Not  a lot of wear and tear seeing as it is a training aircraft.  I figure part of that training would be "Care and Maintenance of the Aircraft" classes.

Special Hobby 1/72 CAC CA-9 Wirraway

Wirraway is an Australian variant of the NA-16. Over 700 were built and it was used mainly as a trainer but also as a fighter.

Kit: Special Hobby CAC CA-9 Wirraway (SH72194)

Scale: 1/72

Paints: Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Metal Colour, Hataka Red Line

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Tamiya & Ammo Mig weathering products

Quite the trouble free build, done in a week. Camo colours were based on info on Special Hobby's instructions that this specific airframe could have been painted in sea camouglage - but apparently that is outdated info. So should have been your normal RAAF green and brown camo.

Special Hobby 1/72nd CAC Wirraway A20-496 of 23 Sqn RAAF

This is my first entry to this Group build and is OOB apart from seat straps and aerial wire. Not a bad kit, although some vague  attachment points for the parts that go into the cockpit and lack of locating pins would put some off. Not entirely sure about the gun in the rear cockpit. Some photos show what looks like a Vickers GO and others show a Browning and my reading says the Browning replaces the Vickers on later aircraft, but don't say when. The paints were Lifecolor and the decals were from the kit and settled beautifully, but are quite thin, and I managed to damage a roundel even after a coat of varnish.

WIP is here:

This is a North American Texan T6-C (1/72nd Academy/Special Hobby) built as an aircraft from Number 6 British Flying Training School (BFTS), based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, in December 1942.

These schools were set up to train RAF pilots, even though, at their inception, the USA was still a neutral power.

For a little more detail this is the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Flying_Training_School_Program

The students usually arrived in the USA via Canada and were therefore issued with RCAF log books (as pictured below). Most would have previously soloed on Tiger Moths in the UK but often no log book was issued for this initial training as it was more of a filter to exclude those who had limited natural piloting skills.

The school produced it’s own magazine entitled ‘Tails Up’. An edition is pictured in the following images:

This build is dedicated to all those who undertook this course. Few are now left. In September 2009 I was privileged to meet several of them at their last reunion in Grantham. We all owe them, and many thousands like them, our freedom.

VH-SNJ is a former RNZAF Harvard III currently owned by the Zuccoli family and living at their Aerotec facility in Toowoomba, Australia. For a short period in the late 1980s it was fitted with a pair of replica CAC Boomerang outer wings. Guido Zuccoli was an accomplished aerobatic pilot, and he was thrilled with the dramatically increased roll rate of 6 foot shorter wing, as well as 10% higher cruise speed and increased rate of climb.

Fuselage and wing centre-section from the 1/72 Heller Kit

Outer wings from the 1/72 Special Hobby CAC Boomerang kit

Mustang wheels and Harvard tyres from Reskit

RNZAF decals from Old Models Decals (OMD0824 - RNZAF Harvards 1970-77 - 1/72)
