Patton Power (and friend)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

In between the frustrating steps of my other projects, I've decided to start something a little more easy going. I picked up Takom's M-46 and Jeep combo, a few days ago.

Bother kits have been previously released separately. I don't think there is anything new here. The patton has the fantastic Korean War tiger markings, and the jeep can also be built as a USMC Korean War vehicle.

The choice was simple.

My thoughts on Takom kits, shift. Some of the early ones were extremely frustrating, but the more recent releases are like Tamiya+. The kits are well engineered and comparatively easy to build, like Tamiya. The + comes from all the small details that are all right there.

So anyway. Here we go.

First the chassis and engine of the jeep. Admittedly, I started this a few nights ago, but I'm just now getting around to posting.

It looks fairly intricate, but the assembly was very simple.

And here are the first steps of the patton. After wrestling with the suspension on Miniart's T-44, this was like a dream.

After taking this photo, I finished the other side. This all took maybe an hour or so.

Sorry about the lack of progress photos, but activities in my little Tankograd have been hectic. I have like five active projects, mostly as I assemble like mad during long Zoom meetings for work ;)

The patton is moving along at a pretty good clip. The kit is fairly well engineered, and Takom really reached a nice balance between detail and "buildability" with this one.

Here is the digest version of the last few days.

First the wheels were assembled and tacked on. They'll be removed prior to painting. Not much to say here other than they're sufficiently round! :)

Then I started working with the link and length track. There is a neat little jig for these, and I much prefer link and length to Indy links, but these are disappointing.

For one thing, there are prominent seams along the sides, and the links have a weird "stepped" appearance when wrapped around the sprocket.

Here is the jig. Sorry, i forgot to take a picture of the track.

I'll return to the track later. I have some AFV Club Indy link T-80 E-1 tracks that might use, or maybe I'll try to figure these out. But for now, I wanted to keep gluing bits together, so I moved to the upper hull.

Lots of little hinged lifting rings/handles on the engine deck

And a lot of nice detailing the front hull. I just tacked on the tool bracket for now, as I'll have to add the tiger mouth first.

I'm glad that unlike Tamiya, Takom understands that driving a tank with the periscopes closed, is not a good idea! :)

THats all for now. Rear hull plate details tomorrow, I hope.

Sorry for not updating in a while. I've been distracted by other projects.

Tracks are in progress. I decided to use the kit tracks and their neat jig. What's not neat is the seem line along the connectors. I tried to clean it up as best as I could, hopefully with weathering and all, it won't be too obvious.

I have applied a general dirt undercoat to the running gear. This is a mix of Tamiya red brown and tire black. The wheel faces and lower hull then got a blast of the black/brown mix with some  khaki drab added.

With the base color on, the fenders and skirts were added. Color will later be added as needed to exposed parts.

That's a nice build, great looking kit too with plenty of detail.  👍

Not really considered Takom previously but have looked at the 1/16th Jeep recently, so nice to hear some positive comments on the quality.
