Binbrook Lightning!

Following a tip on this forum I masked over where the demarcation line will be then sprayed the same colour (Barley grey) over the line to seal it. I’ll leave this to dry overnight now before spraying over the dark sea grey on all the upper surfaces.

It looks quite nice pale, I might need to get yet another Lightning to do in the overall light grey colour.

It’s pretty quick drying this spray so I applied the dark sea grey this afternoon. I don’t want to leave the masking tape stuck on any longer than necessary in case it leaves marks.

Always a slightly interesting moment when removing the masking. Fortunately this time the demarcation line seems adequate enough.

I’ll probably just give it a light dirt wash to show up the panel lines, etc though there are a lot of little vents and exhausts on the fuselage that will need some staining around them.

That does look nice! They grey Lightnings always got some very interesting general grubbyness, looking forward to your weathering. 

 

Are you going to add the natural metal underwing panel?

Thank you Andre! I’ll have to carefully follow the photos when I do the weathering, don’t want to ruin it. 
 

Yes I’ll need to add the panel, I’m considering using kitchen foil for that. Unless anyone has any better ideas? ...

I’ve made the radar shroud from kitchen foil wrapped around a cocktail skewer and painted black. Close ups don’t do it many favours but I tried!

I added a couple of wires to the rear cockpit bulkhead and the yellow thing that I saw in a photo. Just a dry fit for the seat and bulkhead at this stage.

Kitchen foil for those natural metal side panels. Anyone know what they are and why they’re never painted?

After gluing those foil panels on it actually looks like XS933 was one of the few Lightnings that didn’t have them! I’ve peeled them off without too much damage and I’ll touch it up with some Humbrol 167. It should just look like a different panel. 
 

I’ve used the dirt wash for the grimy fuselage and under the wings. Most photos seem to show they were usually pretty dirty, especially in the years towards the end of their service. Is this too much though? ...

Any suggestions as to creating a few different shade panels on the upper dark sea grey surfaces?

I’ve decided to go for Red Top training rounds, without the main fins. They seem to be a kind of silver grey, so that’s what I’ve painted here after cutting off the fins and filling and sanding the slots.

More to do yet; the rear parts including the small tail fins look black, plus there are a few lines to go around but decals should suffice.

Not to my eyes - they got pretty grubby in service. Looking good!

Unfortunately the only red light externally on a F3,F6 and the T5 Lightning was the port wing tip light.

The one on the spine the two underwing ones ( little bulges near the nav lights) and the two (one each side) of the No1 reheat pipe were all clear with whiteish/yellow bulbs.   

 

The natural metal panel under the wing was called the stress panel and it was regularly inspected for cracks. This was the main reason it wasn't painted.

I was thinking about that while working on the kit earlier. I remember going to that soaking wet Last, Last Lightning Show as a kid in 1987. I wish we still had an Air Force like that now. I’ve pretty much given up with spotting, photos and air shows, there’s nothing worth watching anymore apart from the occasional trip to Lakenheath.

Its rather sad but true.

 

And its not getting any better.... Trouble is the more they wither the Armed Forces the less a sizable amount of the public now seems to care after Iraq and Afghanistan.  They are less than interested I reckon.... unlike when we had a huge presence in the world order...

I used the Mig panel line wash for the upper wing surfaces. It’s quite thin, so doesn’t really highlight them much but maybe because they’re already dark sea grey.

Thanks Andre. I like it! Although it doesn’t show up much on dark grey it’s great on the paler greys.
