MiG-17 & MiG-19 wing fence thicknesses

I have a few older 1/48 MiG-17 & MiG-19 kits that look pretty nice, and I would like to build them some day. (HiPM S-105/MiG-19S & AeroMaster Choice MiG-17F, plus others). One of the things that bothers me is the very thick wing fences, plus they are not a uniform thickness. I was thinking of replacing them with suitable plastic sheet fences, but I need to know what thickness plastic to use.

Has anybody ever measured the wing fences on these aircraft?

Or, should I just go with what's in the kit?

Just my .02¢.....you could file/sand down the existing fences or, if you have any P.E. frames left over, use the fences as a template

True,

But I still don't know how thin to make them. :fraidnot:

And that sanding may ruin the surface detail.

Say its a 1/4 inch thick which I doubt thats 250 thou

Divided by 48 thats 5 thou

10 thou would be 1/2 inçh thick

Point taken. :hmmm:

I think I will stick with 10 thou plastic. It may be too thick, but at least it'll look much better than the kits' fences.

I just checked the fences in the HiPM MiG-19 kit, and they are 25.5 thou!

Since I also plan to convert my HiPM 1/48 MiG-19S into a Shenyang JZ-6 reconnaissance variant, the next thing I have to figure out is what color the aircraft is.

Let me see if I can post a link to the photo on airliners.net, instead of the actual photo. :hmmm:

I doubt it is overall white, even a faded white, as that doesn't make sense to me for a recce aircraft. I think it's a very light gray.

Hi Larry,

I'd say very light Gray also!  Compare the gloss White pilot's helmet to the aircraft's paint.  It's my method of color-checking these photos, look for a color I "know" and use it to compare another color to.

Take Care,

No, I did not measure it, but as you can see the base is several centimeters thick while edges are sharp. Maybe you can just file the kit fences, this worked quite well on a 1/72 KP (old tool) kit.

...and, MiG-17F at Kbely, Prague:

Just a thin fence.

Note how the fences are perpendicular to the wing, not vertical.

Hi Larry,

Overall white was a common livery for many Chinese types, J-6, J-7, J-8, Q-5, H-6 belly etc. For me this one looks like a weary one.

What's that under the pylon on the first pic, a jousting pole? :P

Larry

That's an APU-3 launch rail for RS-1/2 Alkali missiles.

Cheers,
