Zimmerit yay or nay? Tamiya 1/48 Tiger I late production

I’ve recently bought Tamiya’s 1/48 Tiger I (late production model) , which comes without Zimmerit coating. The instructions refer to a separate kit if you want to do Zimmerit, but I’m torn between trying to find such a kit, if needed, and historical accuracy.

the decals in the kit allow for (a) tank no 312, 505th Heavy Panzer Battalion, Eastern Front, summer 1944, or (b) tank no 211, 2nd Company, 101st Heavy Panzer Battalion, Normandy, summer 1944 - possibly Michael Wittman’s unit, possibly even his own vehicle.

But the instructions don’t say whether you need Zimmerit for either version...

If you don't want to go down the Tamiya root. AFV Club do a tiger that has got Zimmerit already moulded.

It's a nice kit.

I agree totally . The AFV Club , originally Skybow , late Tiger I is a superb kit . The only downside is the rubber tracks , which are reckoned to be extremely tight . Skybow did an aftermarket set of individual link tracks which are much better , though challenging to assemble . These have also been repopped by AFV Club , though the price has increased dramatically . I've had a couple of Skybow sets from Parabellum at around £4.50 a set , but the AFV ones are the thick end of 20 quid .

I already have the Tamiya kit so it looks like I need the aftermarket Zimmerit stuff.

Hi John

The 48th Scale specialist on Track48 recommend this

It's laser etched paper apparently.   The Tamiya sheet is self adhesive vinyl.

Track48 is THE place 48th Armour AFAIK.

Cheers Troy, sadly I’ve already ordered the Tamiya Zimmerit

OK, be good to see how it goes on.

I don't know if the Perdue Monroe is better,  I have some Tamiya Zimnerit for a PZ IV, but just looked at it... I think the main complaint it was a bit too regular in appearance...    sort of thing only really noticed in macro camera mode though ;)

Anyway, maybe worth knowing about for another project later on.

I really should build some of the 48th armour I have been stashing away for years...

I used this on my mid production Tiger I and I found it worked well. Bit of a chore but worth the effort with a mix of scissors and scalpel. Look forward to seeing your Tiger come together.
