1/144 Bandai Star Wars Millennium Falcon Hanger Bay 3-27 Diorama

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, this is going to be another Star Wars diorama. This time it will be a scene from the first movie A New Hope, which is when we get the first view of the Death Star. The Millennium Falcon got caught in a Tractor Beam and is pulled into hanger bay 3-27. My diorama will be based around this hanger bay. This kit of the Falcon is from the later movie and has the wrong antenna dish shape, so I have ordered the correct round dish from Shapeways.

The first task was to build the hanger bay floor with the 8-sided elevator lift shaft; I bought some 2mm gloss black acrylic sheet in A3 size which had to be trimmed to fit my intended hanger bay box. I part built the Falcon up to get the basic proportions of the lift shaft and get the correct scale of the floor chevron markings. I had some clear Perspex from an old display case that I used to make the side walls of the shaft, this allowed me to mask up the lighted segments. I used old kit parts, zip ties and some photo etch to detail the walls with.

My initial plan was to use some mirror coated styrene sheet to give depth to the shaft, but the position of the Falcon meant this was not possible due to the cockpit over hanging the shaft and its reflection would be seen. I have enough spare Perspex to build a 2nd layer to give me the required depth. I masked and sprayed a light grey onto the acrylic to give me the floor chevron markings. Next will be to drill the holes for the floor lighting, that's all for now folks.

Sometimes I have thought of making a diorama with mine but it has always seemed too complicated for my abilities. The truth is that I cannot imagine a diorama of the Falcon that is not in the spaceport of Mos Esley or in the hangar of the Death Star, and of the two the second is without a doubt the one I like the most. So I'm looking forward to seeing progress.

Good luck with the project.!!!

Hi all, I have been making good progress on the hanger bay this week. I fitted 50 x 2mm white LED’s into the floor, built and lighted the 2nd elevator shaft level and added the lighting around the force field opening. Today I started on the side wall details and made up 2 lighted panels that I have loosely fitted in the bay for you to see how it's going to look. I need to build 6 panels per side so that will be the next work to be done. Bye for now and Happy Easter!

Hi all, well as you can see I have been busy building and lighting the interior walls and ceiling of the hanger bay. I used a couple of 1/350 scale TIE fighters that have been lighted up with a red light from a strand of fibre optic, which also acted as a support for the model. Sadly, the lighting in the hanger bay does make it hard to photograph them. I thought I would add them to give the impression that they had just finished escorting the Falcon into the Hanger. Thanks for your interest in this build and I hope you enjoy the photos of the build so far. Now I can get on and build the Falcon.

Hi all, I have completed the Millennium Falcon. This was The Force Awakens version of the kit that I have converted to the Star Wars A New Hope version by adding a round satellite dish from the Shapeways 3D printing company. I used various pigments with Tamiya X20A to weather the model and Tamiya extra thin cement to chip and distress the decals. I was also lucky enough to buy a 1/144 Bandai TIE advanced and TIE fighter kit off eBay for a good price from a UK seller. These have been built and added into the hanger bay. Next I will be adding the Stormtroopers and the Darth Vader figure along with the final detailing.
