Dear fellow Britmodellers,

here's my 1/72 Eduard Spitfire IXe, built from the "Royal Class Boxing".

This aircraft was flown by Maj. Vasiliy Antonovich Matsievich of 29. GIAP, in 1945.

Painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics.

Photographs by Wolfgang Rabel.

Major Matsievich was the commander of 29. GIAP in May 1945.

He started his flying career during the Russo-Finish war in 1939/1940, scoring his first two (shared) victories on an I-16.

Later in the war, he flew Hurricanes, Yak-9s and the Spitfire. He scored 5 more kills: one Ju-88, one He-111 and three Bf-109s.

Matsievich was awarded the Order of Lenin, twice Order of the Red Banner, Order of Alexander Nevski, Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, twice Order of the Red Star.

He passed away in 1981, aged 68.

Hi My Friend Roman:

Congratulations for your new masterpiece!!!

Have been watching the pics to enjoy the great job you did here, and liked a huge lot the way you finished this bird, specially the surface thin details highlighted properly in black and how the colors look, and the fine weathered finish, specially the underside of the aircraft.

I will need to paint two in these colors, as the builds I have to finish soon required it. Without a doubt the kit is very nice but you have got the very best of it in this build, and the version think have helped you a lot to inspire you for a nice Spitfire to fill the gap in your Soviet Aircraft shelves. Really a nice build!!!

Thank you very much for sharing!!!

Cheers,

Luis Alfonso

Lovely modelling work....

Some points ,

I think that you mean the 26 GvIAP

http://ava.org.ru/iap/26g.htm

This is likley what Eduard based their decals on

spitfire__2.jpg

some detail trivia,

Maybe just the images, but if not, Spitfire whell wells are two colurs,  the external out well is the underside colour (your looks grey green) , the leg section is the interiror colour.(Aluminium paint until late 43 or early 44, then grey-green)

Wheels would be 4 spoke, they became standard in 1944 era.

I'd be surprised if they had bomb racks, the VVS used the Spitfire IX as an air superiority fighter, in their PVO regiments,  in 1945,  27 out of 81 PVO units flew Spitfire IX's, as they got around 1000 !!!

Sadly photos are very rare,  but more VVS images keep turning up.

Spitire IX's carried on until 1947/48 as well.

A better image

Герой Советского Союза Василий Антонович Мациевич

the site linked above, ava.org.ru, is full of fascinating images and information,  of what units flew what types when,  famous pilots and more.

Great model, :goodjob:

Thank you very much for information.

For the most part, I did follow Eduard's instructions, as I could not find any original photograph that would make me any wiser regarding the wheels, wheel wells and bomb racks.

well, as i said, photos are rare!   As an aside, this is because the PVO units were 2nd line units, and harder to get access too, photos that exist would be personal,  and these tend to be rare.   Fortunately more of these are beconig available,  the linked site is a real treasure trove of images.

The Eduard instructions are not always clear, and I only know these kind of details from 10 years of reading Spitfire threads on here, as well as being interested in VVS Spitfire use.    I know it's too late for you, but worth having here for anyone else.

Looking again the paint finish on your model is exquiste,

cheers!
