theplasticsurgeon
Starting a thread for this Arba kit. Donated at Jet Age, where it will undoudtedlly return. I've been asked to build it. Parts. Decals. One of these options. Well actually the middle one only. I built the silver version with a Special Hobby kit, performing its first hop at Hucclecote. Test pilot Jerry Sayer at the controls. I received this book for Christmas, very readable. It describes that Frank Whittle was allowed to taxi the E28/39 out onto the field for the taxi trials - whizzing straight upto 60knots. We'll keep you legend alive Sir. And we are custodians for this, the only completed copy of the Arba kit I've ever seen - and jolly heavy too! Built by modeller Fred Rudd. 1935-2007. RIP Fred - we'll keep it safe for you.
Mjwomack
Special kudos for being the first build thread, and that before I've even finished setting the furniture out 🤣
theplasticsurgeon
This, my second resin build. Here my first, from 2020. Magna Models 1/72 Gloster F9/37 - currently on display at Jet Age. The F9/37 and the E28/39 both designed by George Carter. Jet Age are custodians for his CBE - we'll look after it for you Sir.
zebra
Looks like a nice little kit, best of luck with the build
theplasticsurgeon
Sharing another 'model' E28/39 we have at Jet Age. This one isn't injection either! This a 1:1 scale fibre-glass replica, from the same moulds as street statues at Lutterworth and Farnborough. A presentation by the builder, revealed a lot of modelling techniques that I recognised. All the dry-fitting, fettling, filler and sanding - prior to airbrushing - and a crash moulded canopy. I'll be aiming for this scheme, but am intrigued by the clock on the rear bulkhead. Edited over a year later: That clock is for the brake pressure.
Mjwomack
I was wondering if anyone was entering a 1:1 model? Sign them up!!

That 'modeller' has retired from Jet Age, and relocated to be closer to family. I think this one was enough for him - possibly too much.
theplasticsurgeon
Let construction begin, OK well painting. My interior green is an Airfix starter pot of grey - with as much green added as I can fit in there. As you can see, I've found a 1/48 pilot, and am consulting Jet Age about whether his flying skills are required. Edited - pilot will be fitted.
theplasticsurgeon
Repainted the cockpit in a more vivid green, and installed pilot Jerry Sayer. A first for me, that goggles strap. Very this Tamiya tape. That instrument panel was lost from my Baltimore in Africa GB. Jerry Sayer was the pilot for the first flight of the E28/39, which is how I want to complete this model. A couple of years ago, a family - including grand-mother visited Jet Age. The old lady was Jerry Sayer's niece, whom I was able to introduce to the museum's Chairman. A unique priviledge. Sadly, she was just 2 months old when Sayer was lost - so couldn't really tell us much about him. Joined the fuselage sections, and fitted the wing - having removed the raised camera fairing. Starting the filler process.
theplasticsurgeon
So a lot of filling around those fuselage and wing joins today. And fitted the tailfeathers. Then airbrushed the underside yellow. And drying now.
Jinxman
That yellow has gone on well - what paint is it please?
theplasticsurgeon
Humbrol 69 gloss emamel. Thinned and airbrushed - and still tacky at COP last night. 2
theplasticsurgeon
Disaster, I've run out of Humbrol29 brown, So airbrushed XtraColor X2 RAF Dark Earth instead.
Mjwomack
Distaster? I think you'll find many of us can out-trump that! More to the point, I'm still marvelling at the richness and how even the yellow is- it's a colour that I dread, and straight forward Humbrol has never been that lovely for me. Marklo
Nice build so far, your finish is remarkable. Ditto on the yellow, the dark earth doesn’t look too bad. I gave the special hobby kit in the stash, along with a Heinkel 170 to go along with my Caproni Campini so am watching with interest ( I still think I’ll avoid the yellow if I can) Edited March 25, 2021 by Marklo 1
theplasticsurgeon
Masked, ready for green camo. Airbrushed with Xtracolor X1 RAF dark green, and demasked. Canopy is dryfitted for now.
theplasticsurgeon
Decals - ready for the first flight. Actually I used leftover decals from my Special Hobby build. White crescents on the wing roundels, undersize for the fuselage.
theplasticsurgeon
Decals corrections. Touched up around the wing roundels, and fitted the biggest yellow bordered roundels I've got on the fuselage. In this case leftover from a 1/72 Wellington. Underwing roundels are actually yellow bordered as well, with some overpainting for disguise purposes.
theplasticsurgeon
Getting ready to seal up the cockpit. Framed canopy, then added a seat harness for the pilot. That harness goes under a flap on the bulkhead on Jet Age's E28/39, finally a head cushion.
