Popular Post mark.au Posted March 12, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 12, 2021 Hello all; Here’s my recently completed Lancaster, the RAAF’s 460 Squadron G-George. The WIP thread is from the current GB and is here; I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would and a lot of my preconceived ideas and prejudices about older tooling kits were knocked down. Here’s a few pics of how he turned out, there’s more about the build as well as George itself on my site. Cheers. 77 2
Dunny Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Lovely finish Mark - you absolutely nailed the exhaust staining! Cheers, Roger 1
Sky Keg Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 I`m impressed Mark how you turned this older tooled / version of the venerable Lancaster into something special. It looks great!!!! Mike 1
Meatbox8 Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 (edited) That's a great rendition of this older tooling. The exhaust staining looks spot-on. Just shows that there is still life in these older kits if one is prepared to put the effort in. One question though. I checked out your WIP to find out what the strakes behind the outer engines are all about. Did you ever find out the purpose of them? Never seen those before. Edited March 12, 2021 by Meatbox8 1 1

The real George had these strakes behind its outboard engines, they can be seen in at least one wartime photo as well as how it is now at the AWM. It’s very unusual for sure, I’ve not seen them on any other Lancaster. Check out the WIP thread or the link in my signature for more details. Edited March 12, 2021 by mark.au Clarity 2 1

I wonder if they were added on the production line or at an MU or maybe squadron level. Maybe they were an experiment. 1
Starfighter Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Outstanding build, , and I love the subtle weathering. Thanks for sharing. 1
Mancunian airman Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Thats a beautiful finish on the model. I can only echo the compliments above . . . Well done Mark 1
bigbadbadge Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Great job Mark , it does look flippin gorgeous. Got an older Airfix Lanc in the stash and looking forward to doing after seeing your model. Chris 1

Ruskin Air Services Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Very well done, cracking result from what I think is quite a good kit for its age. 1

I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the fit and moulding. In fact, the fit was such that I was able to complete, including weathering, all of the major components separately. I literally attached the wings, tails and turrets and it was finished. There’s very few kits where that’s possible, even modern ones. Edited March 13, 2021 by mark.au Clarity

There’s very few kits where that’s possible. Given my limited modelling skills, the earlier Airfix Lancaster was always easier - more forgiving , if you will - to build. The current version is, doubtless, better in some respects but it is not an easier build. I wonder how much 'better' kits have to be before we pass the point when, in a previous form, they were at their 'best', Michael 1
Spitfire 123 Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Amazing build, excellent photography too. How did you do the exhaust stains, if I may ask? 👍👍👍 Riley
Lord Riot Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 That looks stunning, you’d never know it was an old kit. Absolutely gorgeous and that exhaust staining looks incredibly realistic. I’ve got this old kit in the stash to do as PA474; if it comes out anywhere near this I’d be very happy. Amazing work. 1
Steve27752 Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Amazing build, I am 61 now and for as far back as I can remember, I have known about G for George. I have never noticed the strikes before, I wonder if they were added for the flight to Australia? 1
