Another one of my favourites, it's a Bf109F2 - Me209 also joining the thread

Recommended Posts

Yes, I am building something that is not a V Bomber. A rare occurrence, I know, but it's happening. I'm building a Zvezda Bf109F2 in 1/72 scale. This is a clip together no glue required kit, obviously I will be assembling it like a normal kit though. I plan to go with the box scheme, I've never done any white camo Luftwaffe aircraft before so any info on these schemes would be appreciated. Were they painted over existing camo? What was the weathering like?

The regular RLM 74/75 camo was covered with the temporal white paint for the winter months.

The scheme on the box top is the same on the 1:48 Eduard Profipack Bf 109F-2, so you could use that as a guide since the instructions are coloured.

Might have to paint that underneath and chip through to it.

Ah that is very useful! According to the Eduard kit, this one lacked its landing gear doors which is backed up by photographic evidence

Interior painted up and fuselage halves attached. There's a nasty seam, I know bf109s are supposed to have some seams but these are too much so I dealt with them, but didn't fully eliminate them.

Hi Adam,

this is a brilliant little kit! You should be having tons of fun with it!

Only snag are the decals that could be better. Like you, I did build mine using glue and cutting anything beforehand that could stop me removing parts during dry fitting! I found the plastic "locks" that allow parts to hold together without any glue, a bit too effective!!!

My kit was stopped at painting level for want of a scheme I was happy with... Am I a fusspot?

Enjoy the end of the build.

Ah yeah I'm aware of the locks being too good, bit encountered any issues though. If decals fail, I can always just print my own since I'm working with a white background. Rather not though, I want a quick build.

Anyway, this is getting pretty quickly built up. Fuselage glued on, many more small parts added. I put the gear on now (wheels aren't glued) as some drawings of this scheme suggest the gear legs were painted in the underside colour (RLM65 I think)

Hi,

yes, the early F-2 are said t have been like the Emils: RLM 02, 71 and 65 underneath.

Interesting concept. Decision, decision...

Your model looks great

then that's what I'll go with, I've got quite a few RLM colours sitting around because before I went crazy with v Bombers I built a lot of Luftwaffe stuff

Huge progress on the 209. I plan to prime the 109 tomorrow and get to painting pretty quickly.

A few fixes to the black primer

IMG_20210313_154206709

I preshaded the model using a Vallejo colour I have lying around that I hardly use (these colours that I use less see far more use as preshading paint)

IMG_20210313_154737484

A coat of Vallejo RLM02 was applied and the props were painted in silver. For once I seem to have got a much better preshading effect than I usually do

Two schemes worn by the Me209V4 are provided. I will be going with this one where it was displayed with a fictional Luftwaffe unit's markings including red 14 numbers and a snake

The primer arrived along with a bunch of new Hataka paints, although most aren't for this model. The primer needed a lot more thinner than most paints I've used so I messed up the first bit which will have to be redone tomorrow. Once I added more thinner and declogged the airbrush it sprayed very well

I really should do this with all my paints, make a set of sample patches....

With the primer fixed, I began the actual painting. First thing was preshading the underside and block filled the areas to be painted yellow with white. Once this was done I airbrushed on Vallejo RLM04.

IMG_20210316_185544565~2

A layer of a slightly darker yellow was painted by brush, I thought the Vallejo paint looked a bit too light.

IMG_20210316_200605923

As soon as this was all dry I realised I'd made a mistake; the yellow band on the tail is too far back. Typical.

So I got out some isopropanol, stripped off the paint and added a new band in the correct place.

Next up, undersides. I found a slight problem with this as I couldn't find my RLM76... After a while of searching I did end up finding it, so the undersides were completed.

IMG_20210316_204535525

Top side got a quick coat of RLM75 and RLM74 followed by chipping medium. The canopy is supposed to be RLM74 so I painted that at this point. I also remembered that some Bf109Fs had one of the lower canopy panels at the front plated over - I only remembered this because I decided to play a bit of War Thunder and flew a Bf109F4 for a bit. This happens to be one such aircraft, so off came the tape from one panel and it was painted over in RLM74 (although it will end up white soon).

So I'm quite happy with the work since the last post. I did the top surfaces making only minimal use of masking as there was some overspray I needed to represent. I did the chipping now as I'm not so confident in how well it would work with a gloss coat on top.

This evening I applied the decals. They're not great, but they'll do. Swastikas from an aftermarket set because the kit ones are in four parts (I understand two parts... but four??)

IMG_20210317_215303423

I forgot to crop these before uploading to do Flickr... Oh well, they're only WIP pics. Some amendments to the chipping will be made do the decals don't look out of place

With the wash removed and a few last details painted, I added a matt coatand some powders.

IMG_20210318_170429_772

I bought Vallejo's matt varnish after getting very good results with their gloss varnish. No way I'll get these bottles confused ever

Mark both with colour labels, red for Matt and Blue for Gloss.

Nice 109.
