And the hose and fitting behind it? Is it connected to the square, or just a coincidence this box could be receive the Curtiss electric propeller switches(D-30/40 & N) but is unused on D-25 which had Hydromatic Hamilton propeller. greatgonzo
Correct. This is a place where function/constant speed selector for CE prop would be mounted. It is the same size, shape and has the same connections. In my opinion we see a kind of mock-up mounted on HS driven plane, ready to be quick-changed, if CE screw would have been used. Or just a provisional element to take a picture for the instructions. Edited March 31, 2021 by greatgonzo

Since HS and CE props could be interchanged on different blocks the box and wiring would probably have been there on all version after that prop control box was introduced. 1

There was a great deal of prop swapping done by enterprising crew chiefs who fitted a better prop to their charge when an engine was changed or underwent major maintenance. if you look at photos of the war-weary razorback Jugs used by the 5th ERS, you will see many that had the late production asymmetric and symmetric CE props installed, and almost all of them came with the CE prop with the 'toothpick' blades. Same thing was done by Mustang crew chiefs who ditched the troublesome Aeroproducts prop that came on their P-51K's for the Hamilton Standard cuffed prop. Mike (Put on a better prop, tweak the boost control a little, put on a good coat of wax, and send your pilot out to kick some Luftwffe a--!)
