A sailor, in a sea of sands... Hawker Hurricane Mk I

Recommended Posts

Hello Dears,

Before going any further, I want to thank my friend @Grey Beema for the inspiration.

So, let's go in Palestine in 1941, after the battle of cape Matapan and some Malta convoy escorts, the aviators of 803 and 806 Sqdn are disembarked at Dekheila..

The Fulmars were worn and inadequate, hence the creation of Royal Navy Desert Fighter Force... Or RNDFF .....

Equiped with RAF Hurricanes Mk I, they fought germans, italians aaaaand french aviation in Palestine...

Enough with history... Let's get some plastic...

Here we go in Sidi Haneish...

IMG_20210310_111956

followed by a pic of the real thing...

Capture

The pics of RNDFF aircrafts are not very often seen...

But, The one I saw shows only one bearing the Sqdn code OL...

So, I choose not to put it on my model...

Colors are Xtracrylics as usual

Flory and oil paints as usual, and some pigments, but I think that I have to learn a bit about pigments....

Very nice indeed CC,  great work on all three.

Did they also operate Albermals too??? Without wishing to make myself look completely stupid, for a change, I think saw something about the FAA pilots being used for their abilities to navigate and find targets in the desert due to their experience over water.  I could be completely wrong, I usually am with the Domestic authorities!!!

Nice job. What is your reference for using the code letter "A" on Z4245? The reason I ask is, in our museum archives we've got a number of photos of 803 and 806 Sqn Hurricanes and one of them is of Z4245. However it carries the letter "H" in what I assume to be red but with a very thin white outline.  Other details are exhaust glare shields ahead of the cockpit and ROYAL NAVY above the serial. The aircraft looks well used and the paintwork doesn't show any evidence of a change of code letter. The photos were taken between 19 October 1941 and 31 December 1941 by Sub-Lt James Harris Kneale whose log book records him flying "H" several times in December.

Another of Jimmy's photos shows an all-black Hurricane of 803 Squadron which has no glare shields. Unfortunately no code or serial can be made out.

Albacores mate,...... biplane TBR`s,..... were used as pathfinders due to their navigational skills and naval Observers were also carried in RAF Wellington`s etc. Albemarle`s were mostly used as glider tugs!..

Very nice indeed.  Who doesn't like a Hurricane?

Thanks Jack...

I know a lot of dudes who knows just the Spitfire

And every WW II aircraft with roundel has to be a Spit...

Sad but true !!

I'll not raise a hell on here, I love the Spitfire too...

But I tend to prefer the workhorse !!
