We have a list of who's building at the front of this thread, hopefully to be joined by others as we go. ( the more the merrier :like: )

As for what people are building,   that's a bit like, knowing what's in the presents 🎁  under the Christmas tree 🎄  it would take all the fun out of it !

As for choosing which kit, I'll refer to our GB Tsar, @Enzo Matrix, altogether now...

Build...

Right! 1/48 FJ-4B it is from me!

Definitely! 😇

  • JOCKNEY changed the title to Matchbox the 50th Anniversary GB (15 Jan - 5 June 2022)

Ladies and gentlemen

His GB magnificence @Enzo Matrix has kindly allocated us the following dates for this prestigious GB

15 Jan - 5 June 2022

So, it's time to drag any qualifying kits out of the stash, for a line up of which one gets built first.

These kits held a special place in our childhood memories growing up, so let's make this GB really special.

Good luck everyone

Cheers Pat

I know I was one of the early names on the list. I have two Matchbox kits in the stash (Supermarine Stranraer and Heinkel He115). However, I’m not certain I can find the time to take part so early in the year.

Never say never, so I expect I’ll be piling in in any case. :pilot:

Excellent news! I'll be building a Night and Day eligible Kit I Did Not Build As A Kid - a double They Also Serve build, too, so it'll actually be a quadruple build then, eh?

Just the one in 6 months, we'll see about that  ! :giggle:

Hey Pat, just realised that dates have been set for this GB… Wow, so early and sooo long! I’ll have to reconsider my build proposals as this will be on our doorstep / workbench quicker than we think.
Cheers.. Dave

I can't believe you guys have missed me off that massive list. Whaddya mean I hadn't registered, I can't believe that either. Nevertheless, just to show I don't hold grudges, I'll give it a go. I should be ready to start by late May. Whaddaya mean it'll nearly be over by then, plenty of time, sides, there's bound to be an extension. ;) :D

Great news, Pat, and a nice long window so maybe even I might finish one build!

Time to find the Boeing P-12E, Buffalo, P-40N and Beaufighter and decide what AM to add.....

Perhaps foolishly, I've got a Siskin on the bench that I'm making a start on, but I don't think I can wait with that one..... :D

Cheers,

Mark

I don’t tend to join in with group builds as I hardly ever finish anything. However, this does appeal purely on a nostalgic level so I went and sourced a few Matchbox kits yesterday, including a Heyford for a sensible price. More likely I’ll do the Wellesley as I have fond memories of building it when it first came out and it’s such an odd looking machine

Indeed!
I'm going to order some yellow cotton wool for Plan B, because there's no palm tree on the box art 😁

Could this have influenced the Box Art of the Matchbox Wespe?

The Bandai kit of the Wespe would have pre-dated the Matchbox kit by a few years.  I wonder if seeing the Bandai Wespe in a "tropical" diorama (complete with Palm Trees) influenced both the Box Art and the Diorama Base?

Hi @Swamp Donkey

Great to have you with us.

I've just finished a book about the RAF vs Italian airforce in East Africa where the Wellesley sees lots of action,  so really looking forward to seeing it built.

I promise you will get lots of support and encouragement to not only finish these build but dare I say, make additional purchases  !

Cheers Pat

I'd like to give this one a lash, so put me down please.  Perhaps time to bite the rigging bullet and do some of the Matchbox biplanes.

Hi @JosephLalor

Delighted you are joining us,  having done some biplanes recently, rigging isn't as bad as you imagine.

Best of luck.

Already have 5 on their way, too idle to raid the stash which resides in a 20’ container along the road!

(from memory, I found a Strikemaster, Buckeye, Wellesley, Heyford and Privateer, and not for stupid prices)

I’ll have a look in the stash when I go and retrieve the Christmas Tree in December

I loved my Matchbox Wellesley - it was one of the few that I built as nipper that I was really proud of. It was quite late on in my childhood kit-building years and I was just getting to grips with not spreading that awful cement everywhere and also doing a half-decent job of the painting :) I think it may yet exist in my Mum's loft :D The Hurricane Mk.IIc was another one that turned out well, as I recall. Ah.....happy days!

Cheers,

Mark (wallowing in nostalgia!)

I'm really enjoying the variety of potential builds we are going to see in this GB.

Dave is poised over the keyboard ready to do all the stats.

Here's hoping for lots of cars boats etc to complement the traditional aircraft.

I believe in a moment of rashness I might have committed to building a Privateer  ! What was I thinking  :banghead:

Still could have been worse, anyone got the 1/72 Corvette convoy escort vessel in the stash ? Ideal chance to build it

Yes Pat, poised I am to get back into GB statistical analysis once again. News of the GB has also motivated me to get back onto my Matchbox Wellington once again. I’m at the decal stage, however there still seems quite a bit to go. I’ll be happy to have finished it before Jan 15 which will then springboard me into starting another classic Matchbox kit.

Now the Flower Class corvette would be an excellent choice and ideally suited to the six month duration of this Group Build. I’d love to see someone have a crack at one of these. Any takers out there? I’d also like to see a few more Ships being built and wouldn’t even mind having a crack at one myself?

Cheers and keep those thoughts and excellent box art images coming.. Dave
