Camouflage 747

Recommended Posts

In the below thread I joked about a wraparound camo 747,

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235089230-zvezda-1144-c-40b-blue-woes/

but having seen pictures of C5 Galaxies wearing wraparound camo I'm left thinking "what if? How hard can it be?"

What colours and what pattern would I need to paint a wraparound camo 747?

I think the 747 uses some features originally developed for Boeing's submission to the CX-HLS (Cargo eXperimental - Heavy Logistics System) competiton which was won by Lockheed's C-5 Galaxy - rememer Boeing manufactured a freighter version of the 747 which was equipped with an "up-and-over" nose mounted cargo door like the Galaxy.

To offer a logical back story for your camouflaged 747, civilian operators such as Atlas and Kalista use 747 freighters to provide contract transport services for the US Air Force so you could easily create an argument for a camouflaged US Air Force operated 747 Freighter (a C-4A or C-25A ?) being operated in a routine "point A to point B"  freight transport role shipping the crates of Polish Sausage and cans of Mountain Dew served at the annual Mildenhall Air Fete which would not necessarily need the specialist capability provided by a more expensive C-5 or C-17.

Yes Boeing principally designed the 747 freighter first.

Seen the Atlas 747 on approach to Mildenhall. Wasn't too worried about the backstory just yet

The 747 was also considered for a program where it would carry a very large number of cruise missiles and launch them from a port in the back. Such aircraft probably would have been painted like other SAC aircraft were in those eras. It would be a fairly simple conversion from a cargo 747 if you were thinking of doing it.

One of the more "imaginative" ideas for the 747. I was thinking of a KC-25/MRTT as the KC-747 was offered to the USAF but it lost out to the KC-10.

Anybody got a preference for paint? I'm looking at either MrHobby or Hakata, which is better? Or should I go with something else?

Permission to "borrow" your excellent backstory Sir?

Permission duly granted - intrgued to see what a Euro One Camouflaged Boeing 747/Boeing C-4A would look like

Had to get my prescription so I picked up some paint. I've decided to brush paint as I'm sure I would mess up spraying camo.

I've gone for,

Humbrol 29 dark earth, 66 olive drab, 117 US light green, 125 US dark grey and 149 dark green.

I've got some decals from an Italeri Marine One so seeing as this is just a bit of fun, this might turn into "camo one" 😜

Hi Abandoned,

US Senator "Scoop" Jackson (Washington state) porkbarreled a project to convert previously owned 747 airliners to military transports to be designated C-19s and assigned to the NY ANG at Stewart ANGB, New York.  Jackson died before the project went too far, and the C-19 was cancelled.  At the time, the unit was flying 2-seat Cessna O-2s which might have made the transition seem a bit extreme, but nearly all the pilots flew 747s for their civilian day jobs - not too much of a stretch.  The unit eventually flew C-5s, so their Euro I camouflage and markings might have been appropriate for a C-19.  Note that the scheme was not a wraparound, being monochromatic 36118 on undersides.

Alternately, there was a Boeing/DARPA offer to build 747s as cruise missile launchers, which would have served under SAC.  There first camouflage scheme would have been 36118 below, some equivilent of Olive Drab on top, and a pattern of dark gray (36092?) over top and bottom.

Your "what-if" isn't so outrageous after all...

Cheers,

Dana

Several drawings were circulated of the proposal for the cruise missile carrier based on the 747 that Dana mentioned, just google boeing 747 CMCA and you'll find a few. There was also a desktop model showing the internal arrangement.

Or if cruise missiles aren't your thing...

Designed as an anti-missile system, the available technology wasn't mature enough to meet the Air Force's requirements and the project was terminated in 2010 with the two prototypes being retired to AMARC at Davis Monthan AFB.

Only 1 prototype,It was ultimately scrapped in September 2014 after all usable parts were removed.
