USMC M60A1 ERA

Recommended Posts

Time to start a new project, enough of the winter blues, to be different I decided to build something from the stash!

Some classic Tamiya plastic:

There’s no drama in this box, no hidden messages in the instructions it’s just classic Tamiya. I already have a bit of sand in the display cabinet so I think it’s going to be out of the box in NATO three colour camouflage.

After a couple of two hour sessions most of the main construction is done, requiring clean up & a good looking at tomorrow before I get some paint on.

This is where we are right now:

You May think I’m flying along here but it’s bound to slow down from here on.

Thanks for looking in.

A couple of hours progress has seen the construction phase pretty much done, the only drama being this gappy situation at the rear, it’s perfectly replicated on the other side so I’m taking comfort that it’s not my fault!

Soon fettled with some plastic card, once painted & weathered it will be invisible.

The hull, turret & cupola are just sat on each other in these photos, I will paint them & the ERA as separate items.

Hoping to get a black primer / undercoat on it tomorrow & then back to work for a few days.

Thanks for looking in.

A quick update................

Black undercoat on, white pre shading on, undersides got the first coat of green (Humbrol 117 from a tin, thinned & brushed on).

Quick picture below with some bits in preparation, mainly from the Tamiya modern accessories set & a Mini Art USMC tank commander.

Really enjoying the approach you and @Andy J are taking with your modelling, this has to make for enjoyable modelling.

The M60 will look super with a bit of paint thrown at it!

Nice work

An update, small progress, the first thin coat of green (Humbrol 117) is on. The pre shading is very obvious & I always get a bit “twitchy” here, is the pre shading too much? Have I messed up? Obviously this will all blend together at the end.........

An update,

two coats of green didn’t quite cover the white but a thin third coat seems to have done the trick. Lots of work on the ancillary bits & the wheels in particular.

No pictures as it looks much like it does above but I’ll make the effort for next time!

Update with pictures.

Wheels, a bit of a dark wash inside to give it some depth(?) followed by some aluminium to depict some wear & tear. It’s all a bit bright & in your face currently but I suspect it’s going to fade away under dry mud & dust.

Moving onto some painting, it’s NATO 3 colour & the green is done. I’m not totally convinced the preshading is worth the effort, at times I can convince myself I can see the difference but most of the time........

The black is actually panzer grey with a few drops of black in, I like it more than the “pure” black. The pattern comes from the supplied Tamiya instructions.

Still very much “in progress” but thanks for looking in.

Yes, I'm with you on that one Phil. I tried it and wasn't convinced. I have more success adding pigments afterwards.

Nice work on the cammo and the wheels.

Progress & pictures.

First of all the wheels. Even after a few days of sitting I’m not convinced & was considering repainting, but after one very thin coat of “dirt” (Humbrol 110) things are looking up I think.

I’ll give that a day or two of drying time & see what’s going on.

Camouflage is complete & very fresh so that’ll get a few days to dry & harden. There appears to be large gaps in the camo but the ERA panels have yet to be mounted & then there’s the usual collection of bits to be mounted.

That’s where we are, getting there, the ERA panels have proven to be quite fiddly but they will be beaten into submission & should appear in the next photos. Thanks for looking in.

An update!
A small but significant step forwards, the ERA panels are now attached and have been painted in Humbrol 030 which contrasts nicely with the 117 that is the green in the camouflage. Photos of the real thing shows a contrast but different light shows differing levels of contrast. I’ve also begun to attach a few bits to the rear of the turret.

The paint is all still fresh on top but underneath is ready for some dirt so that’s the next job, followed by wheels & the kit tracks.

Thanks for looking in.
