1/72nd Tamiya Mosquito FB.VI, 1 Sqn, RAAF, N. Australia and the Pacific Islands, 1945

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

              As part of the Australian & New Zealand GB in memory of my friend Andy (Silver Fox), this is my first one across the finishing line,..... representing A52-505, coded NA-Q which is one of the British built Mosquito FB.VI`s used by 1 Sqn RAAF in the Pacific and one of two (the other was NA-E) used to escort RAAF Spitfires to the Pacific Islands, The new RAAF serial was applied on a patch of RAAF Foliage Green which covered the original RAF serial;

At the time they were in use in the forward area wearing the originl RAF camouflage,..... the exhaust covers were still in place, as seen here on NA-E. After returning to Australia they were re sprayed silver to match the other 1 Sqn aircraft and later returned to the front line, but not in time to see any further acton.

Unlike the Australian built Mossies, these ones were equipped with larger tropical filters under the engine nacelles and I used a set which was kindly given to me by another friend who made some from converted Hurricane Vokes filters and did resin copies for mates  (thanks Lee!). The model was brush painted, using DK Decals and here is the WIP;

And the model;

Sweet Aussie Mossie Tony!

Those converted Vokes filters worked out rather well, didn't they?

I assume you used the supplied Tamiya decals for the radiator 'no step' markings, any tips on how you got them to behave so well?

Thanks mate,.... yeah my mate Lee did a good job on those Vokes filters,..... I just stuck them on! Yes the radiator decals were from the kit,.... I cut out the area around the raised detail after applying them,..... and once dry they were sealed with a coat of gloss varnish.

As has been said already, very nice Tony.  And it's not a Spitfire Vc!

LOL,.... yeah not a Spitfire Vc,...... although I will be revisiting that subject! Cheers Dave.

Fantastic job on this Tony, that scheme with those roundels really does look the goods. A bit of O'toole magic brings it together a treat. :)

Steve.

Cheers Steve,...... as I mention in the WIP,.... I took a bit of a gamble with those upper wing roundels,..... assuming that the RAAF just stuck with the original RAF roundels and painted the red centre out with white,.... as seen on the RAF 618 Sqn Mossie FB.IV`s also in Australia. If the RAAF did paint over the RAF roundel and replace it with a smaller one, as seen on the silver painted aircraft,..... then I can simply overpaint the roundel on the model and do the same!
