Ju-88 A-5

Hallo

This will be my 6th Ju-88 in scale 1/48. The former kits were Revell and Dragon.

I thought that this present day kit by ICM would overrule all the old kits.

Yes it does. But vice versa. The kit shows me a poor engineering of the basic airframe.

The wing joint to the fuselage is a merry-go-round, with one pin. If you try to make a dry fit, nearly impossible.

The fuselage is soft in the wing joint area, so you can squeeze it with easy. I built an additional bulkhead.

The cockpit has a fresh air ventilation to the wing! Nice!

The first encounter with cleverness was the stabilator of the elevator.

Actually you can not glue it. The elevator prevents any access to get glue on the seam.

I should be more calm, but the pilot seat is also a masterpiece of engineering!

What should be better?

I am close to put this kit back in my shelf.

For bad times, or for a person I dislike.

What should I do? I am really frustrated by such a design!

Happy modelling

I give up! This ICM kits of Ju-88 are nonsens.

Read it!

Nothing to add, just I am a modeller and I have no interest in toys or fantasy a/c. Wate of money!

Now some news:

First of all I found a wonderful link:

Junkers 88 A1 detail photos - Aviation Discussion - Large Scale Planes

https://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/21808-junkers-88-a1-detail-photos/

and a resin cockpit which fits for the ICM Ju-88 in 1/48.

It help me to build a quite good accurate Ju-88:

http://www.aimsmodels.co.uk/Ju-88-Kits/ju-88-kits.html

The resin parts are already ordered.

The hint I got from the forum here.

This may be of some interest, in case anyone else is frustrated by the ICM kit!

My build will start later on, since I will start 3 Dornier kits before.

Now I have to finish my Panzer IV Ausführung H with interior from MiniArt.

Happy modelling

To be honest the only area of problems I experienced with the ICM kit was on the wing assembly which, as you've shown, has huge gaps. I solved it by using liberal amounts of masking tape and leaving the glue to cure overnight.

The engines are another area of trouble, since the firewalls won't let you fit the cowlings. I just left them off on my second build, but didn't escape from the gaps.

Those issues aside, it's much less complex than the Revell 32nd 88.

Hallo

After a long time, again on this project.

In meanwhile I got the resin AIMS cockpit update.

Now I started with the replacement.

Sawing cockpit floor with the Japanese saw and afterward fitting and filling and grinding.

Actually it is a little tricky altogether.

I hope to get along.

Since the window frames are in two cases divided in a upper and lower part, makes the general fit not easier.

Actually I will start with the interior as a mix from Eduard and AIMS etched parts. Will see what the result will be.

Hallo

My disappointment at the beginning:

The aftermarket AIMS resin part seemed to make my kit correct.

Oh far from this goal. I corrected something, but not all.

There are so many construction areas still left.

So I was cogitating around and found some ideas:

https://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/21808-junkers-88-a1-detail-photos/

This links show the restoration of a Ju-88 A-1.

All the groups of interest are shown and details never seen before.

What I do know: No kit from a Ju-88 I built was correct. Dragon or ICM.

The major flaws are the cockpit details.

No matter which conversion kit it was, all are incorrect. ICM, AIMS.

So, what could I improve now?

To get the panels to the left correct.

The instruments in front also.

The rudder pedals and steering column is not so easy.

Here I have to find a reasonable position.

Now I find a way with my kit parts, resin parts and etched parts.

It will b e a hybrid model anyway.

When I got through detail work, I will let you see.

Hallo

Now I proceeded a little bit.

The major task was the general fitting of the resin cockpit.

This issue kept me busy. Because the overall fit with the fuselage was one issue.

The interior overall fit the next one.

The height of the seat in the resin cockpit is one thing, the forward position the other.

But I had to compromise in all directions to get it done.

Today I did the engine plastic and etched parts.

Spraying and brush painting are the next steps.

The interior has also to be brush painted now after spraying.

Well, so let’s see what is next.

Hallo

Some steps further.

With spraying the model and little parts.

The spraying from insignia was a big amendment by using a transfer foil.

This was not my idea.

It comes from New Ware mask.

Here I found it the first time.

For further information, I will make a thread about spraying insignia with transfer foils.

Hallo

Some steps further.

To explain, the resin parts cause a longitudinal displacement of all interior parts. The vertical position is right.

The gun barrels are all cut at the ball area. I put a metal pin inside to have an easier assembling later on.
