Aluminium finishes were used at first but light grey was introduced later, so either is feasible for an airframe that had been about long enough to collect field applied camouflage and finish its career wheels-up in Mongolia in 1940. The pictures I’ve seen show quite a specular appearance, so they would be consistent with either aluminium or light gloss grey. FWIW the instructions suggest either aluminium or grey for that scheme. Massimo Tessitori’s web site goes for an aluminium base colour. I will spray my Type 142 top coat (definitely silver!) first and ruminate some more before committing. AdrianMF
Well my airbrush technique certainly isn’t up to fine random “squiggles”! But using a spring bow pen and some slightly diluted paint I think I’m happy with this: … and I think that my aluminium finish is un-shiny enough to look quite a lot like a gloss grey under the squiggles
