to be honest personally the driving/flying/sailing of an RC model doesn't really 'float my boat'.

Ha Alun, I fully identify with that point.  Glad I'm not the only one here who finds running model boat kind of boring and the compromises required for access and robustness etc can spoil the finish of an otherwise splendid model.  Rudders in particular don't scale down very well, so its OK if you don't want it back

Great model coming together here

Cheers

I can actually understand that..

I prefer the building of my models and then getting them operating, for me the sitting sailing is 3rd.

I don't have too much space so eventually I end up selling the model to and another project.

if it doesn't work no buyers or less money

I had submarines as well that were RC and they were diving too and yeah first couple of runs under water great then the novelty goes and its boring.

Ok first things first - picked up a little zip lock bag of goodness from a friend this morning

spacer.png

This is before a wash so has a bit of dust but pretty happy with them.

I undercoated my main mast and then started on the final piece the hf/df birdcage aerial.

vKfugW2.jpg

I had a photo etch one so started with that (have a mention me and photoetch do not get along)

9xiKTYP.jpg

Started ok be eventually I started getting it stick to my fingers and everything else so I decided to just use the photoetch as a template and make from plastic rod instead.

I am happy enough with how it came out It is a fraction taller than it should be but I am in no rush to make again - maybe one day when I have forgotten the pain

I feel like that, if it was possible to sail it in scale water then maybe, but for me it just makes it look more like a model, bit like 1/35 Tiger tanks photographed on lawns, 😁

This is looking really impressive btw

Cheers

A couple of little things arrived in the post today.

Unfortunately my other order which has the guardrail stanchions and grab rail stanchions I am waiting for from the same place went on a world tour. For some reason (even though it had Australia on the address label) Royal Mail decided to send it on a tour around the USA for 2 weeks before returning it to Cornwell. Now being resent and hopefully the sorter this time knows where Australia is ! Was happy to have found these decals though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been a busy week with life so have not got a lot done this week but some parts I was waiting for arrived which allowed me to finish the grab rail around the funnel. So I got the main mast and the funnel painted as modules. It is definitely coming together.

spacer.png  spacer.png

Jobs for the coming week

- build and paint the triple torpedo tubes.

- fit guard rails to remainder of Seacat deck module

- fit guard rails to funnel module in front of funnel for access to signal deck.

- paint other PVC covers the lighter grey I have used on funnel module cover.

- finish 2nd accommodation ladder and guard rail bases to do starboard waste.

Lets see how that goes.

One of the real life things that got in way this week was repurposing some old Ikea bookshelves to make a wall unit. (still to be finished/trimmed so don't look too close)

They large space in the middle is the Wai's future home. The shelf above will hold the lifeboat projects (and a couple more after that probably)

Ha, I fully relate to this.  "And where's this one going to go?" is a not uncommon question in my house :hmmm:

Great detail on this build

Cheers

Haven't caught up with this build for a few months but she is looking absolutely fabulous.  Some really first class modelling going on here.

Will get two green LEDs for the starboard side - they are a fraction large but will be masked so little less colour show but think they look ok.

Are you sure they're green?  I wouldn't expect all round green lights so high on the mast.  They look more like masthead obstruction lights to me which are red both sides.  The image below is about the biggest colour photo of WAIKATO I can find and although it is challenging to be certain, both sets look red to me.

Good point - did not even really think about it - just applied red and green without considering. Easy fixed.

Another busy week (not modelling) but lets see how I went on to do list

Jobs for the coming week

- build and paint the triple torpedo tubes.

CHECK

- fit guard rails to remainder of Seacat deck module

NQj9cvs.jpg

CHECK

- fit guard rails to funnel module in front of funnel for access to signal deck.

CHECK

- paint other PVC covers the lighter grey I have used on funnel module cover.

LrHHyrB.jpg

- finish 2nd accommodation ladder and guard rail bases to do starboard waste.

mGnDDQ7.jpg

CHECK ( have done the guard rail bases as well)

Next week was going to aim for the starboard waste but I am out of brass rod for the guardrails and that will take a week or so to get here.

I might work on the grab rails on starboard side (but again will need rod to finish) and maybe the refuelling points.

Waist? 😁        Gidday, you're doing a terrific job of this, with all that superb detail. I saw a similar NZ ship (Taranaki) many years ago when she visited the small town I lived in on the south coast of Oz, Esperance, back in the 1970s.       Regards, Jeff.

Got up early this morning and one of my new arrivals was some silver foil vinyl letters so decided to have a crack at making a name plate while I was fresh.

I am not talking a display name plate, but rather the actual ships name plates. These were hung in the waist's at the 'top' of the accommodation ladder when in harbour or at anchor. Because of a few little detail like this (stowages, covers etc) I am basically modelling at sea but at the point of special sea duty men closing up to enter harbour.

in7MuW9.jpg

Name plate can be clearly seen in this photo.

The board is (as scale about 10 mm long and 2.5 mm wide. I strart by cutting a larger board, staining it and when dry put on a piece of masking tape to act as  a base for the letters. The letters are 2mm and each is individual. Used fine tip tweezers and a scalpel blade and eventually got  to point below. Glade I wasn't doing Canterbury - 7 letters was my limit. I then trimmed the board to size (and after this photo stained the cut edges as well as thinned the board to half thickness)

kkjpj2w.jpg

Then test mounted with a but of bluetack.

iKdU6rk.jpg

In the process of doing so I discovered I had mounted the accommodation ladder one guardrail stanchion too far aft.  Luckily the rail are not glued in yet so will lift out section of rails, shorten, remove base for furtherest aft stanchion, remove ladder (was loose so was about to re glue the other day, glad I waited) and move forward and all will be good.

A bit of progress today on the starboard waist.

First I fitted the wooden beading.

HSbNxnk.jpg

Then the bases for the guard rails. If I was doing again I would either drill larger hole into hull and glue rod into hull or use pre drilled tubing as getting the small piece of plastic rod glued to hull square and then hand drilling each for the base of the stanchions was definitely not the way to do it, but got their in the end.

F7EGDTh.jpg

I then built the guard rail sections. These are only glued at each end to rails but not glued into place as I will spray them gunmetal before doing that.

4tCetG6.jpg

Then I fitted the scrambling nets, boats boom and the accommodation ladder. (the plates at base of ladder were glued flush to hull after ladder had dried in place)

Today I managed to do a bit more detail work on the bridge screen and the starboard waist grab rails.

PmTdMWU.jpg

I fitted the clear resin refuelling points and will just paint them by hand later and then add the piping etc once the superstructure is mounted.
