I’ve been spectating on the Malton  Rally today , up in the forests of North Yorkshire in and around Pickering . Thought I would post some pictures I took at the service area , a selection of the older cars taking part .

Thanks for your comments . This was a club rally , not for any particular championship but it always attracts a good and varied entry . There were top spec current modern cars running , but I thought a selection of oldies was nice to share . The Yorkshire forests are little used for rallying nowadays , mountain biking has seen to that , so to see the cars out in them  again is great .

but those in photos were cars what were used when I really started be involving in rallying.

I was a little before these - Mk1 Escorts, Hillman Avengers and Vauxhall Magnums were the equivalents when I started (although the Saab was even before my time...!!)

I remember when I was really small one with my parents and they were talking to Simo Lampinen in Jyväskylä when service was done for Saab. My very first contact to motorsport. When I got older and I was travelling around the world and often met Simo in airports he was asking latest news. Real gentleman.

Just noticed that this is Steve Bannister - that Escort must have some good miles on the clock as I'm sure I remember him being mentioned loads in the local paper when I was young. And if memory serves he was always in a Mk2 Escort.   Sadly that was a lot of years ago now.

Your correct . Steve Bannister is a local legend . Always driven Mk2 Escorts and knows the Yorkshire forests so well he can drive them blind  ! He can still be found at the top of the time sheets and must now be nearly 70 !  Think he's the only driver to have won the Roger Albert Clark historic rally more than once . Sadly he retired on the last stage on Sunday .

The final round of the WRC is next weekend, who is your pick to take the championship?

My gut feeling is that it will go to Ogier again, but I am really hoping Evans can pull a rabbit out of his hat helmet!

That boy has worked so hard this season, he deserves to win it.

Good luck to all.🏁

I also wish that we get new name this year., but I think realistic Ogier is now too far in point and he can play safe. Sad that Kalle is bit too far from 3rd position too and his task is get those mandatory manufacturer points this time. But Evans is clearly name for next years.

I agree with the others ; Ogier just knows how to push when he has too . I wasn't an Ogier fan early in his career , he seemed arrogant and moody , but after his years at M Sport Ford he seems to have mellowed a bit and I now admire what he has achieved in diferent cars , something the other dominant Sebastian never did . I would love Elfyn to do it , but I think his time will still come . Strange to think I saw Elfyn taking part in the Malton Rally , where my earlier photos were took , in about 2007 / 8 !

Stranger to me is that I actually competed (loose term!) against his dad Gwyndaf in a number of Welsh road rallies in the mid 70's....!!

I say competed as a loose term as Gwyndaf usually finished in the top five while if I finished at all it was, errrr, more towards the bottom five....!! 🤣 I always thought Gwyndaf was unfortunate in not getting a proper works drive as IMO he was good enough to compete for the World Championship given the right car.

Keith, now feeling rather old.....

Yes it looks like a Porsche built by Francis & Richard Tutthill out of Banbury, and SAAB, a girl I went out with (before meeting my wife of now of 53 years) her two brothers had three cylinder(three Carb) two stoke SAABS I think were the model 96 tuned by a guy out of Leighton Buzzard. They were very light and very quick. Once came across one of those new Jaguar E Types on the new M1! The Jag had a problem overtaking them! They also met Pat Moss whose husband (Erik Carlsson)to be had the works 96 SAAB he won the Monte Carlo Rally in.

The Porsche is a Tuthill run car , driven by former British Champion Ryan Champion . He was using this rally as a shakedown for the forthcoming Roger Albert Clark Rally .

The Porsche 911 mentioned above and in my earlier photos has just won the Roger Albert Clark rally , battling against the elements and hordes of Escorts !

MAYBE SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T YET WATCHED TODAY'S RACE !!!!

Well, I've largely lost interest in F1 for many years now, but having watched the crazy Saudi Arabian GP I decided to watch today's title decider. After the steward's lap 1 decision I very nearly turned over to watch the football - so glad I didn't after that last lap!!

And I really liked the race director's response to Wolf's complaint - ''It's called motor racing....."

Brilliant end to the season!

Keith

Edit - correcting ridiculously bad tpnigy typing 🤣

Regardless of which driver and team you support, the biggest problem with F1 this year has been the variable approach to the rules. Both drivers have benefitted and lost out on decisions, but the rules have not been applied in a consistent manner. I find it a shame that a particular action on track can be penalised at some races and not on others. This means we have situations where drivers are not even sure what the rules are.

The final lap safety car issue is a great example of the rules being open to interpretation and not definitive. If the race director can change their mind mid-race, how can teams make strategic decisions? Add in to this, the teams should not be able to approach the race director during the race and negotiate an outcome. I think the FIA has been lacking in leadership for the whole season, so while the outcome has been close, I think it has taken the shine off a season with two fantastic drivers pushing each other to be so far ahead of everyone else.

Well done Max, better luck next time Lewis, but the FIA does need to up its game!
