Excellent work, and progressing quickly. You’ll have your Mustang finished before I even start mine!

Thanks very much.

Not sure about how soon I'll finish, but I'll try to keep it moving.

Cheers,

Alistair

Not much to report.

Some sanding done, canopy masked and fitted.

The canopy has just been fixed in place with a few drops of Krystal Klear as I intend to finish with the canopy open and this will save me masking.

Wings, empennage, wing tank fittings and the front intake attached.

Clamping and tape were required.

Nice going Alistair.

It will be done by the weekend....

Simon.

Thanks so much.

Not certain about that I'm back at work on Thursday for 4. So we'll see.

Clamps and tape removed. Some filler used in places.

The whole thing was given a run over with various sanding sticks and then polished up with a 4000.

I popped the undercarriage doors in with Blu-tac so I can paint the black stripe in the right place.

Then the UMP grey primer was flung about.

Still got a little work to be done around the nose and wing root and rear fairing.

Not sure what happened here, but I'll let everything dry, sand and recoat and we'll see where it goes from there.

The thing about primer Alistair, is that it shows up those little bits.

But saying that , there is nowt there really to worry about mate.

Simon.

Hi Simon,

I knew it would show up some area requiring additional work, but there's not much to be done.

I'm surprised and pleased that there's so little to do.

The fuselage is going to be a NMF so it'll need to be right.

Alistair

I would give her a coat of gloss black once you have sorted those wee probs out.

It gives a good base colour for the NMF.

That's the plan at the moment.

I've some Tamiya Gloss Black Laquer ready and waiting.

I'm hoping to get it on before I go back to work and let it gas off for the four days I'm there as I've had probs with Xtreme Metals fish-eyeing if it's sprayed on too soon.

Unless you are using their Chrome or Polished Aluminum, you do not need a gloss black base with Xtreme Metals paints. Any smooth, glossy surface will do. On my last build (Hobbycraft F-89C) I used Alclad medium gray gloss as my base for Xtreme Metal aluminum.

I'm planning Polished Aluminium for the fuselage and High Speed Silver for the wings, so being a lazy so and so, planned on the overall gloss black coat. 😁

Sanding, repriming and then a gloss coat.

Not as smooth as I would like but nothing that can't be fixed with micromesh and polish.

I'll let that gas off (Ooh Er Matron) for a few days and come back when I've got some more time off work.

See you all later,

Thanks for looking,

I've just had a thought.

If you spray with neat levelling thinners it can reactivate the paint and then levels out.

Or so I have been told.

Might give that a try and see what happens, what have I got to lose.

She's coming along very nicely, Alistair! It looks like you've got the primer coat down really well - I can't see many blemishes, and any that there are will polish out. Excellent,

Thanks,

I've just tried a quick spray of Levelling thinners and it seems to be working.

It's very difficult to get a photo as the black just reflects the flash.

We'll see how it goes.

Nothing ventured.....

I'll be watching to see how well you get on - I was planning to use Vallejo Gloss Black Primer on my build, but it doesn't react well to levelling thinner. So I might re-think and adopt your approach.

The orange peel was entirely my fault but the neat thinners are having an effect. I'll still need to polish and such but nowhere near as much.

Is the Vallejo stuff the rebadged Stynylrez. I've never had a problem with that laying down beautifully. It's very forgiving of heavy handed clots like me.

I really don't know. Its quite thin (the Stynylrez I've got is quite a bit thicker) but goes on nicely, covers well and seems to hold their metallic finishes so they don't peel or flake.

Hi Mark just checked and Vallejo isn't Stynylrez.

The opinion seems to be that is can peel under masking but if you let it cure for at least 24 hrs it should be fine.

Thanks, Alistair, that's good to know! I'll be sure to give it plenty of time to cure before I try anything clever with it!
