Old decals

I have acquired 3 WW2 aircraft kits by Hasegawa which are all 20+ years old. The kit details are remarkably good (though with a little flash) for their age. However, I am concerned over the decals, even though they are all in sealed bags and look in good condition. Is it worth giving them a go or would I be better off going down the aftermarket route? Many thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have any problems at all, with a mere 20 years.  However if you are concerned try a light coat of varnish over them.  This was the recommended route for dealing with the early Eastern European transfers which fell apart as soon as they met the water.

You could consider whether the aftermarket would provide you with something more interesting that the subjects in the kits.  With something in hand you can freely try with (say) the national markings and see if any problems arise.  I doubt it, but peace of mind is valuable.
